Abstract

The present invention relates to specific DL-lactide-ε-caprolactone copolymers and the application of these polymers in the production of biodegradable medical applications. According to the present invention a polymeric material comprising poly(DL-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) is provided, which is obtained by the copolymerization of DL-lactide and ε-caprolactone, having a lactide content of 51-75 mol %, most preferably of 62-69 mol %. The materials of the present invention have excellent mechanical properties and may be used to provide articles for medical application, in particular nerve guides.

Claims (26)

1. Polymeric material comprising an amorphous poly(DL-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) copolymer obtained by the copolymerization of DL-lactide and ε-caprolactone at a temperature in the range of from 100° C. to 130° C. during a period of time in the range of from 3 to 40 days, wherein said polymerization is carried out using a catalyst in an amount such that the molar ratio of lactide and ε-caprolactone monomers to said catalyst (M/I) is in the range of from 1000 to 100000, which copolymer has a polydispersity (Mw/Mn) of less than 1.8; has an intrinsic viscosity of more than 4 dl/g; has a lactide content of 62-69 mol %; wherein the fraction of the D-enantiomer or L-enantiomer of the lactide is from 65-95 mol %; and wherein the lactide sequence length is in the range of 5.5 to 9.2 and the ε-caprolactone sequence length is in the range of 1.9 to 2.5.

2. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , wherein the fraction of the D-enantiomer or L-enantiomer of the lactide is in the range of from 70 to 90 mol %.

3. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , wherein the fraction of the D-enantiomer or L-enantiomer of the lactide is about 85 mol %.

4. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , having a polydispersity (Mw/Mn) of less than 1.5.

5. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , having an intrinsic viscosity of more than 5 dl/g.

6. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , having an intrinsic viscosity of more than 5.5 dl/g.

7. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , which is obtained by carrying out said polymerization at a temperature of 110-120° C.

8. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , which is obtained by carrying out said polymerization during a period of 3-40 days, wherein the temperature is linearly dependent on the polymerization time, said temperature being in the range of from 130° C. (at 3 days) to 100° C. (at 40 days).

9. Polymeric material according to claim 1 , which is obtained by carrying out said polymerization using Sn(oct) 2 catalyst, in an amount such that the molar ratio of lactide and c-caprolactone monomers to said catalyst (M/I) is in the range of from 9000 to 12000.

10. Article for medical application, comprising a polymeric material according to claim 1 .

Article according to claim 10 , which is selected from the group consisting of biomedical drains; biomedical tubes for stenting purposes; biomedical sheets for intra-corporeal application; biomedical sheets for topical use; wound care foams; protective sheaths for needles and tubes which are introduced into the body; micro-spheres for drug delivery; micro-spheres, particles and plugs for embolization purposes; micro-spheres for cosmetic surgical purposes; vascular prostheses; tissue engineering scaffolds.

12. Nerve guide according to claim 10 .

Polymeric material comprising an amorphous poly(DL-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) copolymer obtained by the copolymerization of DL-lactide and ε-caprolactone at a temperature in the range of from 100° C. to 130° C. during a period of time in the range of from 3 to 40 days, wherein said polymerization is carried out using a catalyst in an amount such that the molar ratio of lactide and c-caprolactone monomers to said catalyst (M/I) is in the range of from 1000 to 100000, which copolymer has a polydispersity (Mw/Mn) of less than 1.8; has an intrinsic viscosity of more than 4 dl/g; has a lactide content of 62-69 mol %: wherein the fraction of the D-enantiomer or L-enantiomer of the lactide is from 65-95 mol %; and wherein the lactide sequence length is in the range of 5.5 to 9.2 and the ε-caprolactone sequence length is in the range of 1.9 to 2.5 wherein the fraction of L-enantiomer of the lactide is 85 mol %.

Polymeric material of claim 13 wherein the copolymer has a lactide content in the range of 65-67 mol %, an intrinsic viscosity in the range of 5.2-6.2 an average sequence length of lactide copolymer units in the range of from 8 to 9.2 and an average sequence length of ε-caprolactone copolymer units of 2.0-2.5.

15. Polymeric material according to claim 3 wherein the fraction of L-enantiomer of the lactide is 85 mol %.

Polymeric material of claim 15 wherein the copolymer has a lactide content in the range of 65-67 mol %, an intrinsic viscosity in the range of 5.2-6.2 an average sequence length of lactide copolymer units in the range of from 8 to 9.2 and an average sequence length of ε-caprolactone copolymer units of 2.0-2.5.

17. Article for medical application, comprising a polymeric material according to claim 14 .

Article according to claim 17 , which is selected from the group consisting of biomedical drains; biomedical tubes for stenting purposes; biomedical sheets for intra-corporeal application; biomedical sheets for topical use; wound care foams; protective sheaths for needles and tubes which are introduced into the body; micro-spheres for drug delivery; micro-spheres, particles and plugs for embolization purposes; micro-spheres for cosmetic surgical purposes; vascular prostheses; tissue engineering scaffolds.

19. Nerve guide according to claim 17 .

20. Article for medical application, comprising a polymeric material according to claim 16 .

Article according to claim 20 , which is selected from the group consisting of biomedical drains; biomedical tubes for stenting purposes; biomedical sheets for intra-corporeal application; biomedical sheets for topical use; wound care foams; protective sheaths for needles and tubes which are introduced into the body; micro-spheres for drug delivery; micro-spheres, particles and plugs for embolization purposes; micro-spheres for cosmetic surgical purposes; vascular prostheses; tissue engineering scaffolds.

22. Nerve guide according to claim 20 .

A nerve guide including polymeric material comprising an amorphous poly(DL-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) copolymer obtained by the copolymerization of DL-lactide and ε-caprolactone at a temperature in the range of from 100° C. to 130° C. during a period of time in the range of from 3 to 40 days, wherein said polymerization is carried out using a catalyst in an amount such that the molar ratio of lactide and ε-caprolactone monomers to said catalyst (M/I) is in the range of from 1000 to 100000, which copolymer has a polydispersity (Mw/Mn) of less than 1.8; has an intrinsic viscosity of more than 4 dl/g; has a lactide content of 62-69 mol %; wherein the fraction of the D-enantiomer or L-enantiomer of the lactide is from 65-95 mol %; and wherein the lactide sequence length is in the range of 5.5 to 9.2 and the ε-caprolactone sequence length is in the range of 1.9 to 2.5, and having a wall thickness in the ranges of from 0.30 mm to 0.40 mm.

24. The nerve guide according to claim 12 having a wall thickness in the ranges of from 0.30 mm to 0.40 mm.

25. The nerve guide according to claim 19 having a wall thickness in the ranges of from 0.30 mm to 0.40 mm.

26. The nerve guide according to claim 22 having a wall thickness in the ranges of from 0.30 mm to 0.40 mm.
