Abstract

An optical transceiver for detecting an incoming light beam and for transmitting an outgoing light beam along a common optical axis is provided. Such an optical transceiver provides a compact optical transceiver that is suitable for a wide variety of applications.

Claims (31)

1. An optoelectronic device, the optoelectronic device comprising:

an optical detector configured and arranged to receive and detect an incoming light beam by way of an optical fiber, the incoming light beam including at least a first wavelength and/or range of wavelengths;

an optical transmitter configured and arranged to transmit an outgoing light beam by way of the optical fiber, wherein the outgoing light beam includes a second wavelength and/or range of wavelengths, the optical detector comprising one or more materials that are optically unresponsive with respect to at least a portion of the outgoing light beam so that an optical signal path for the outgoing light beam is defined that extends from the optical transmitter through the optical detector and the optical detector and the optical transmitter being stacked one on top of the other and arranged so that the incoming light beam and outgoing light beam are received and transmitted, respectively, through a top surface of the optical detector;

a first substrate stacked together with the optical detector and optical transmitter such that the optical transmitter is stacked between the first substrate and the optical detector;

a second substrate positioned on the top surface of the optical detector such that the incoming light beam and the outgoing light beam must pass through the second substrate; and

a controller situated on the second substrate and in electrical communication with the optical detector and/or the optical transmitter, the controller being situated on a side of the second substrate that faces the top surface of the optical detector.

2. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 wherein the optical detector includes one or more absorbing layers that at least partially absorb light of the first wavelength and/or range of wavelengths and at least partially passes light of the second wavelength and/or range of wavelengths.

3. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 wherein the optical detector and the optical transmitter are situated on the first substrate.

4. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the optical detector and/or the optical transmitter include one or more pads, and the controller includes one or more pads.

5. An optoelectronic device according to claim 4 wherein selected pads of the optical detector and/or optical transmitter are electrically connected to select pads of the controller.

6. An optoelectronic device according to claim 5 wherein selected pads of the optical detector and/or optical transmitter are solder bump bonded to select pads of the controller.

7. An optoelectronic device according to claim 5 wherein selected pads of the optical detector and/or optical transmitter are wire bonded to select pads of the controller.

8. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the first substrate and the second substrate are situated substantially parallel to one another.

9. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the second substrate is transparent or substantially transparent to the first and second wavelengths and/or range of wavelengths.

10. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the second substrate includes a silicon-on-sapphire substrate, and the controller includes a control circuit in the silicon layer of the silicon-on-sapphire substrate.

11. An optoelectronic device according to claim 10 wherein the incoming light beam and/or the outgoing light beam must pass through at least part of the control circuit.

12. An optoelectronic device according to claim 10 wherein the incoming light beam and/or the outgoing light beam do not pass through the control circuit.

13. An optoelectronic device according to claim 12 wherein a portion of the silicon layer is removed or substantially removed from a region of the silicon-on-sapphire substrate that corresponds to a region that the incoming light beam and/or the outgoing light beam passes through.

14. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the second substrate is GaP.

15. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 wherein the controller includes one or more sensors.

16. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 wherein the controller is electrically connected to one or more sensors.

17. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 wherein the controller includes one or more capacitors for storing charge produced by the optical detector.

18. An optoelectronic device according to claim 17 wherein the controller is at least partially powered by the charge stored in the one or more capacitors.

19. An optoelectronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the second substrate includes an optical element.

20. An optoelectronic device according to claim 19 wherein the optical element is a refractive optical element.

21. An optoelectronic device according to claim 19 wherein the optical element is a diffractive optical element.

22. The optoelectronic device according to claim 1 , wherein one or more trenches are provided that extend through a portion of the optoelectronic device, the one or more trenches serving to help define a current aperture of the optical transmitter and/or provide an electrical connection to the optical detector and/or the optical transmitter.

23. The optoelectronic device of claim 1 , further comprising a transistor that, when turned on, allows the photocurrent to travel through the optical transmitter when generating the outgoing light beam.

24. The optoelectronic device of claim 1 , wherein a photocurrent generated by the optical detector is used to power the transmission of the outgoing light beam by the optical transmitter.

25. The optoelectronic device of claim 1 , further comprising an optical adhesive that attaches the optical fiber to the second substrate.

26. The optoelectronic device of claim 1 , further comprising an insulating material substantially surrounding the optical detector and the optical transmitter.
