Abstract

A laser includes an Nd:YVO 4 crystal end-pumped with diode-laser light having a wavelength at which the absorption coefficient for Nd:YVO 4 is less than about 0.35 (35%) of the absorption coefficient at 808 nm.

Claims (22)

1. A laser comprising:

a gain element of Nd:YVO 4 , having a length of at least 5mm, said gain element being end-pumped with pump-light selected to be different from the peak absorption wavelength of the gain element and falling between about 814 and 825 nanometers in order to reduce thermal stresses and breakage of the gain element, said laser generating greater than 20W of output power.

2. A laser as recited in claim 1 , wherein the wavelength of the pump source falls between 816 and 820.

3. A laser as recited in claim 2 , wherein said gain-element has an Nd ion concentration of 0.5% or greater.

4. The laser of claim 3 , wherein said pump-light is about 818 nanometers.

5. The laser of claim 4 , wherein said pump-light is unpolarized.

6. A laser comprising:

a gain element of Nd:YVO 4 , having a length of at least 5mm, said gain element being end-pumped with pump-light delivered thereto via at least one optical fiber, and wherein the pump-light has a wavelength selected to be different from the peak absorption wavelength of the gain element and falling between about 814 and 825 nanometers in order to reduce thermal stresses and breakage of the gain element, said laser generating greater than 20W of output power.

7. A laser as recited in claim 6 , wherein the wavelength of the pump source falls between 816 and 820.

8. A laser as recited in claim 7 , wherein said gain-element has an Nd ion concentration of 0.5% or greater.

9. The laser of claim 8 , wherein said pump-light wavelength is about 818 nanometers.

10. A laser comprising:

a gain element of Nd: YVO 4 having a length of at least 5mm, said gain element being end-pumped with pump-light delivered thereto via one or more optical fibers, said pump-light being unpolarized on delivery from said one or more optical fibers, the pump-light having a wavelength selected to be different from the peak absorption wavelength of the gain medium and falling between about 816 and 820 nanometers in order to reduce differential stresses and breakage of the gain element, said laser generating greater than 20W of output power.

11. A laser as recited in claim 10 , wherein said gain-element has an Nd ion concentration of 0.5% or greater.

12. The laser of claim 11 , wherrein said pump-light wavelength is about 818 nanometers.

13. The laser of claim 12 , wherein said pump-light is unpolarized.

14. A laser, comprising:

a laser resonator including a gain element of Nd:YVO 4 having a length of at least 5mm, said gain element being end-pumped with pump-light selected to be different from the peak absorption wavelength of the gain medium and falling between about 814 and 825 nanometers in order to reduce breakage of the gain element, said laser generating greater than 20W of output power.

15. A laser as recited in claim 14 , wherein the wavelength of the pump source falls between 816 and 820.

16. The laser of claim 15 , wherein said gain-element has an Nd ion concentration of less than 0.5%.

17. The laser of claim 15 , wherein said gain-element has an Nd ion concentration of ).5 % or greater.

18. A laser as recited in claim 17 , wherein said pump-light wavelength is about 818 nanometers.
