Abstract

An improved method and apparatus for controlling a scanning laser are provided by the present invention. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, a single feedback sensor is placed along the scan path of a scanning laser such that it senses the laser twice during each scan. The time intervals between the sensor sensing the laser are measured and examined to determine the position and direction of the scanning laser. These time intervals may also be used to ensure that the scanning device is operating at its resonant frequency. In systems that require detecting the laser as it enters and leaves the imaging window, a reflective device is used to create a beam path from the edge of the imaging window back to the single feedback sensor such that the sensor detects the laser four times during each scan. In such an embodiment, the drive signal used to scan the laser along its scan path can be compared to the pulses received from the sensor to determine whether or not a detected time interval corresponds to a particular physical portion of the scan path.

Claims (25)

1. A device for determining a position and direction of movement of a scanning laser beam reflected from an oscillating reflective device, said device for determining the position and direction comprising:

a single sensor that produces an output when the scanning laser beam scans across the sensor wherein the sensor is positioned along a scan path of the scanning laser beam in a position to be illuminated twice by the scanning laser beam in a single oscillation cycle of the oscillating reflective device;

a clock for receiving the sensor output and measuring time intervals between sensor outputs, each of which corresponds to the sensor detecting the scanning laser beam; and

a processor for determining the position and direction of the scanning laser beam based upon the measured time intervals and stored parameters.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein at least one of the stored parameters corresponds to the position of the sensor along the scan path of the scanning laser beam.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein a drive signal is used to control the oscillation of the oscillating reflective device.

4. The device of claim 3 wherein the processor adjusts the frequency of the drive signal based on the measured time intervals.

5. The device of claim of claim 3 wherein the amplitude of the drive signal is adjusted based upon the measured time intervals.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the scanning laser beam provides a latent electrostatic image on a light sensitive surface.

7. The device of claim 6 wherein the latent electrostatic image is provided on the surface of a rotating photoconductive drum.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein the position and direction of a single scanning laser beam determined.

9. A laser scanning apparatus comprising:

a laser producing a laser beam;

a scanning apparatus for directing the laser beam through a scan path in scan cycles to produce a scanning laser beam having at least first and second travel directions;

a single sensor positioned in the scan path of the laser beam in a position to be illuminated twice by the laser beam in a single scan cycle, the sensor producing a sensor output when it is illuminated by the laser beam;

a logic system for:

receiving the sensor output;

calculating first and second time intervals based upon the time intervals between the sensor outputs, each of said first and second time intervals corresponding to a time interval between illuminations of the sensor by the laser beam;

for storing parameters corresponding to a travel direction of the scanning laser beam; and for determining a position and direction of the scanning laser beam based at least in part upon the first and second time intervals.

10. The laser scanning apparatus of claim 9 further comprising a light sensitive surface wherein the scanning laser beam provides a latent electrostatic image on the light sensitive surface.

11. The laser scanning apparatus of claim 10 wherein the light sensitive surface comprises a surface of a rotating photoconductive drum.

12. The laser scanning apparatus of claim 11 wherein the laser scanning apparatus comprises a single laser.

13. The laser scanning apparatus of claim 9 wherein the laser scanning apparatus comprises a single laser.

14. The laser scanning apparatus of claim 9 wherein the laser scanning apparatus comprises a laser printer.

15. The laser scanning apparatus of claim 14 wherein the laser scanning apparatus comprises a single laser.
