Abstract

Intravascular cutting device that does not require an inflatable balloon for blade deployment. A cutting wire can be reversibly moved between a retracted, non-cutting position in which the cutting wire does not contact tissue and an extended, cutting position in which the cutting wire does contact tissue.

Claims (28)

1. An intravascular cutting device comprising:

(a) a housing having a longitudinal slot;

(b) a cutting unit comprising:

(i) a distal securement member;

(ii) a proximal securement member; and

(iii) a cutting wire having a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end of the cutting wire attached to the distal securement member, the proximal end of the cutting wire attached to the proximal securement member;

(c) an activation wire attached to the distal securement member;

(d) a positioning securement member secured to the housing, the positioning securement member located proximal of the cutting unit; and

(e) a biasing member having a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end of the biasing member attached to the proximal securement member of the cutting unit, the proximal end of the biasing member attached to the positioning securement member;

wherein the cutting unit is biased to a non-cutting configuration.

The intravascular cutting device of claim 1 , wherein pulling on the activation wire forces the distal securement member to move towards the proximal securement member, thereby causing the cutting unit to assume a cutting position in which a portion of the cutting wire extends through the longitudinal slot and exterior of the housing.

The intravascular cutting device of claim 2 , wherein the cutting unit further comprises a stop that limits a minimum distance between the distal securement member and the proximal securement member, whereby pulling the activation wire beyond a point at which the stop has limited relative travel between the distal securement member and the proximal securement member causes the cutting unit to move towards the positioning securement member.

4. The intravascular cutting device of claim 3 , wherein the cutting wire will axially cut a distance equal to travel of the activation wire beyond the point at which the stop has limited relative travel between the distal securement member and the proximal securement member.

5. The intravascular cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the cutting wire comprises a spring wire bearing a diamond blade.

6. The intravascular cutting device of claim 5 , wherein the spring wire comprises either stainless steel or a nickel titanium alloy.

7. The intravascular cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises a tube.

8. The intravascular cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the distal securement member, the proximal securement member and the positioning securement member each comprise a radiopaque material.

9. A method of excising a lesion within a vascular system, the method comprising;

(a) positioning an intravascular cutting device proximate the lesion, the intravascular cutting device comprising:

(i) a first securement member;

(ii) a second securement member spaced from the first securement member;

(iii) a cutting wire having a first end and a second end, the first end of the cutting wire attached to the first securement member and the second end of the cutting wire attached to the second securement member, the cutting wire biased to a non-cutting position;

(iv) an activation wire attached to the first securement member;

(v) a housing having a longitudinal slot, wherein the first securement member, the second securement member and the cutting wire together form a cutting unit having a first configuration in which the cutting wire remains within the housing and a second configuration in which a portion of the cutting wire extends through the longitudinal slot and outside of the housing; and

(vi) the cutting unit further comprising a stop that limits a minimum distance between the first securement member and the second securement member, whereby pulling the activation wire beyond a point at which the stop has limited relative travel between the first securement member and the second securement member causes the cutting unit to move within the housing;

(b) manipulating the activation wire to move the first securement member towards the second securement member in order to move the cutting wire into a cutting position; and

(c) cutting the lesion.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the cutting wire will axially cut a distance equal to travel of the activation wire beyond the point at which the stop has limited relative travel between the first securement member and the second securement member.
