Abstract

A cryogenic catheter includes an outer flexible member having at least one cryogenic fluid path through the flexible member. The at least one fluid path is defined by a plurality of flexible members disposed within the outer flexible member.

Claims (35)

1. A method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations comprising:

providing a catheter including a flexible elongated member, wherein the flexible elongated member includes a thermal transfer region;

positioning the thermal transfer region in proximal relation with the tissue to be treated, such that thermal energy may be transferred between the thermal transfer region and the tissue; and

sequentially creating a temperature differential between different portions of the thermal transfer region effective for thermally treating the tissue at a plurality of locations without repositioning the catheter.

2. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 1 , further comprising using an electrogram to locate a tissue region for thermal treatment.

3. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 2 , further comprising controlling the treatment using means for regulating the temperature differential between different portions of the thermal transfer region.

4. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 3 , wherein the means for regulating the temperature differential comprises a feedback control unit coupled to at least one sensor, the at least one sensor being disposed on an exterior surface of the catheter.

5. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 4 , wherein the at least one sensor is a thermocouple.

6. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 1 , further comprising monitoring the temperature differential between different portions of the thermal transfer region.

7. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 6 , wherein the temperature differential is monitored using at least one sensor disposed on an exterior surface of the catheter.

8. The method for thermally biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one sensor is a thermocouple.

9. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 8 , wherein the at least one thermocouple is integrated with an internal feedback controller to provided independent and variable regulation of the thermal transfer region.

10. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 1 , wherein the thermal transfer region comprises a plurality of thermal conductive surfaces joined in a spaced-apart relationship.

11. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 1 , wherein the temperature differential is such that thermal energy is transferred from the tissue at a plurality of locations to the thermal transfer region.

12. The method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations according to claim 1 , wherein the temperature differential is such that thermal energy is transferred from the thermal transfer region to the tissue.

13. A method for thermally treating biological tissue comprising:

providing a catheter including a flexible elongated member, wherein the flexible elongated member includes a thermal transfer region;

positioning the thermal transfer region in proximal relation with the tissue to be treated, such that thermal energy may be transferred between the thermal transfer region and the tissue; and,

sequentially creating a temperature differential between the thermal transfer region and the tissue effective for thermally treating the tissue,

wherein the thermal transfer region comprises a plurality of thermal conductive surfaces joined in a spaced-apart relationship,

wherein the thermal conductive surfaces are joined by a flexible connection element.

14. A method for thermally treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations comprising:

providing a catheter including a flexible elongated member, wherein the flexible elongated member includes a thermal transfer region;

positioning the thermal transfer region in proximal relation with the tissue to be treated, such that thermal energy may be transferred between the thermal transfer region and the tissue;

treating the tissue by sequentially creating a temperature differential between different portions of the thermal transfer region effective for thermally treating the tissue at a plurality of locations; and

controlling the treatment using means for regulating the temperature of the thermal transfer region.

15. A method of using a surgical catheter for thermal treatment of tissue at a plurality of locations comprising:

positioning the surgical catheter in communication with the tissue, the surgical catheter includes a distal end having a plurality of thermal conductive surfaces, the thermal conductive surfaces being joined in a spaced-apart relationship, such that the thermal conductive surfaces are in thermal relation with the tissue at a plurality of locations; and

treating the tissue at a plurality of locations by creating a temperature differential between the thermal conductive surfaces, effective to transfer thermal energy between the tissue at a plurality of locations and the thermal transfer region.

16. A method for treating biological tissue at a plurality of locations comprising:

providing an energy transfer catheter including an electrogram to locate a tissue region for treatment;

positioning the energy transfer catheter in proximal relation with the tissue;
