Abstract

An air intake apparatus for supplying air to an internal combustion engine comprises a hollow plastics material enclosure, an air filter and an air compressor which when activated compresses air supplied to the engine. The enclosure houses the air filter and compressor. An engine air supply path through the enclosure passes from an air inlet to the enclosure to an air outlet from the enclosure via the air filter. The enclosure inlet and enclosure outlet define respectively an upstream end of the air supply path and a downstream end of the air supply path, wherein the compressor is secured within the enclosure by resilient vibration-isolating mounts.

Claims (10)

1. An air intake apparatus for supplying air to an internal combustion engine, comprising an enclosure, an air filter and an air compressor which when activated compresses air supplied to the engine, the enclosure containing the air filter and compressor, an engine air supply path through the enclosure that passes from an air inlet to the enclosure to an air outlet from the enclosure via the air filter, said enclosure inlet and enclosure outlet defining respectively an upstream end of the air supply path and a downstream end of the air supply path, wherein the compressor is secured within the enclosure by resilient vibration-isolating mounts.

2. The air intake apparatus of claim 1 , in which the enclosure containing the air compressor is subdivided by a dividing plate which holds the air filter upstream of the air compressor, the dividing plate also having an air inlet feature to allow air to enter an inlet to the air compressor after the air has passed through the air filter.

3. The air intake apparatus of claim 2 , in which the air inlet feature is an aperture in the dividing plate.

4. The air intake apparatus of claim 2 , in which the air inlet feature helps to secure and/or align the compressor within the enclosure, the air inlet feature including a resilient vibration-isolating mount.

5. The air intake apparatus of claim 1 , in which the compressor has an air outlet, the compressor air outlet being connected to a portion of the enclosure via a resilient vibration-isolating air conduit.

6. The air intake apparatus of claim 1 , in which an air gap is provided between the compressor and the enclosure except at intervening resilient vibration-isolating mounts.

7. The air intake apparatus of claim 6 , in which the resilient vibration isolating mounts provide thermal insulation between the compressor and the enclosure.

8. A motor vehicle, comprising an internal combustion engine for powering the vehicle and an air intake apparatus for aspirating the engine, wherein the air intake apparatus comprises an enclosure, an air filter and an air compressor which when activated compresses air supplied to the engine, the enclosure containing the air filter and compressor, an engine air supply path through the enclosure that passes from an air inlet to the enclosure to an air outlet from the enclosure via the air filter, said enclosure inlet and enclosure outlet defining respectively an upstream end of the air supply path and a downstream end of the air supply path, wherein the compressor is secured within the enclosure by resilient vibration-isolating mounts.

9. An air intake apparatus for supplying air to an internal combustion engine, comprising an enclosure, an air filter and an air compressor which when activated compresses air supplied to the engine, the enclosure containing the air filter and compressor, an engine air supply path through the enclosure that passes from an air inlet to the enclosure to an air outlet from the enclosure via the air filter, said enclosure inlet and enclosure outlet defining respectively an upstream end of the air supply path and a downstream end of the air supply path, wherein the compressor is secured within the enclosure by resilient vibration-isolating mounts, the enclosure containing the air compressor being subdivided by a dividing plate which holds the air filter upstream of the air compressor, the dividing plate also having an air inlet feature to allow air to enter an inlet to the air compressor after the air has passed through the air filter.

10. An air intake apparatus for supplying air to an internal combustion engine, comprising an enclosure, an air filter and an air compressor which when activated compresses air supplied to the engine, the enclosure containing the air filter and compressor, an engine air supply path through the enclosure that passes from an air inlet to the enclosure to an air outlet from the enclosure via the air filter, said enclosure inlet and enclosure outlet defining respectively an upstream end of the air supply path and a downstream end of the air supply path, wherein the compressor is secured within the enclosure by resilient vibration-isolating mounts, an air gap is provided between the compressor and the enclosure except at intervening resilient vibration-isolating mounts.
