Abstract

A vertebral defect device includes a housing having a convexly tapered distal end, a convexly tapered proximal end, a top, a bottom, an anterior side, a posterior side and an outer surface having generally rounded edges thereby facilitating insertion into an intervertebral space between a pair of adjacent vertebrae. The length of the housing as measured from the distal end to the proximal end is greater than the width of the housing as measured between the anterior and posterior sides and is greater than the height of the housing as measured between the top and bottom.

Claims (46)

1. A vertebral defect device comprising:

a housing having a convexly tapered and generally bluntly rounded distal end, a convexly tapered proximal end, a top, a bottom, an anterior side, a posterior side and an outer surface having generally rounded edges thereby facilitating insertion into an intervertebral space between a pair of adjacent vertebrae, a length of the housing as measured from the distal end to the proximal end being greater than a maximum width of the housing as measured between the anterior and posterior sides and being greater than a maximum height of the housing as measured between the top and bottom,

the taper of the distal end diminishing more gradually than the taper of the proximal end and diminishing to the generally bluntly rounded distal end, the taper of the distal end being configured to provide distraction of adjacent vertebrae during insertion of the vertebral defect device,

the maximum width of the housing as measured between the anterior and posterior sides being different than the maximum height of the housing as measured between the top and bottom,

the top and bottom of the housing are at least partially convexly shaped enough to cooperatively mate with concavities of adjacent vertebrae, and

the anterior and posterior sides are at least partially convexly shaped in order to allow installation of the vertebral defect device into the space defined by the concavities of the adjacent vertebrae.

2. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , further comprising an interior chamber generally defined by a shape of the housing.

3. The vertebral defect device of claim 2 , wherein the interior chamber houses bone grafts.

4. The vertebral defect device of claim 2 , wherein the interior chamber houses non-bone matter to instigate vertebral bone ingrowth.

5. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , further comprising a connector configured to temporarily and removably couple with an insertion tool.

6. The vertebral defect device of claim 5 , wherein the connector is one of a threaded shaft, a socket, a detent, a hole and a slot.

7. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the top has an opening to encourage vertebral fusion and is configured to align the vertebral defect device within an intervertebral space.

8. The vertebral defect device of claim 7 , wherein the opening in the top defines an edge configured to grip vertebral bone.

9. The vertebral defect device of claim 7 , further including at least one arch spanning the opening, the arch having an at least partially sharpened edge configured to grip vertebral bone.

10. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the bottom has an opening to encourage vertebral fusion and is configured to align the vertebral defect device within an intervertebral space.

11. The vertebral defect device of claim 10 , wherein the opening in the bottom defines an edge configured to grip vertebral bone.

12. The vertebral defect device of claim 10 , further including at least one arch spanning the opening, the at least one arch having an at least partially sharpened edge configured to grip vertebral bone.

13. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the housing is a generally solid piece of material.

14. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface has a plurality of openings to encourage vertebral fusion.

15. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end is generally bluntly rounded.

16. The vertebral defect device of claim 15 , wherein the distal end has a lesser average radius of curvature than the proximal end.

17. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the length of the housing is between about 10 mm and about 30 mm.

18. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the maximum width of the housing as measured between the anterior and posterior sides is between about 10 mm and about 25 mm.

19. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the maximum height of the housing as measured between the top and the bottom is between about 5 mm and about 25 mm.

The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , wherein the housing is formed at least partially of a biocompatible material selected from the group consisting of stainless steel, titanium, cobalt-chrome alloy, nickel plated metal, a biocompatible alloy, a biocompatible ceramic, a biocompatible polymeric material and a biologically absorbable material.

21. The vertebral defect of claim 1 in combination with an insertion tool, the insertion tool comprising an elongate stem and a gripping mechanism.

22. The vertebral defect device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first opening disposed in the top of the housing to encourage vertebral fusion,

a second opening disposed in the bottom of the housing to encourage vertebral fusion,

an upper shelf disposed within the housing and generally proximate to the first opening, and

a lower shelf disposed within the housing and generally proximate to the second opening.

23. The vertebral defect device of claim 22 , wherein the upper and lower shelves are coated with a biocompatible ceramic material to promote bone growth.

24. The vertebral defect device of claim 22 , wherein the upper and lower shelves have a plurality of ingrowth openings.

25. The vertebral defect device of claim 22 in combination with an insertion tool.

26. The vertebral defect device of claim 22 , wherein at least one of the top and the bottom further includes at least one arch spanning the respective opening, the at least one arch having an at least partially sharpened edge configured to grip vertebral bone.

27. A vertebral defect device comprising:

a housing having a convexly tapered distal end, a convexly tapered proximal end, a top, a bottom, an anterior side, a posterior side and an outer surface having generally rounded edges thereby facilitating insertion into an intervertebral space between a pair of adjacent vertebrae, a length of the housing as measured from the distal end to the proximal end being greater than a maximum width of the housing as measured between the anterior and posterior sides and being greater than a maximum height of the housing as measured between the top and bottom, the proximal and the distal ends are both generally bluntly rounded and the distal end has a lesser average radius of curvature than the proximal end,

the taper of the distal end diminishing more gradually than the taper of the proximal end, the taper of the distal end being configured to provide distraction of adjacent vertebrae during insertion of the vertebral defect device,

the maximum width of the housing as measured between the anterior and posterior sides being different than a maximum height of the housing as measured between the top and bottom,

the top and bottom of the housing are at least partially convexly shaped enough to cooperatively mate with concavities of adjacent vertebrae, and

the anterior and posterior sides are at least partially convexly shaped in order to allow installation of the vertebral defect device into the space defined by the concavities of the adjacent vertebrae.

28. The vertebral defect device of claim 27 , further comprising:

a first opening disposed in the top of the housing to encourage vertebral fusion,

a second opening disposed in the bottom of the housing to encourage vertebral fusion,

an upper shelf disposed within the housing and generally proximate to the first opening, and

a lower shelf disposed within the housing and generally proximate to the second opening.
