Abstract

A medical balloon is constructed with protrusions thereon to prevent unwanted movement of an expandable, implantable medical device such as a stent during delivery and deployment. At least some of the protrusions are underlying the expandable, implantable medical device to grip the expandable, implantable medical device.

Claims (26)

1. A medical balloon mounted on a catheter, said medical balloon having an outer surface, an expanded stated and a collapsed state, wherein the balloon comprises a plurality of outward protrusions, said protrusions being insular relative to the surface of the balloon, wherein an expandable, implantable medical device is mounted about the medical balloon, the expandable implantable medical device having an inner surface, an outer surface and a plurality of side surfaces extending between the inner surface and the outer surface, wherein the outer surface of the medical balloon faces the inner surface of the expandable implantable medical device and wherein at least some of the protrusions extend part of the way tin at least one side surface of the expandable, implantable medical device to releasably engage the expandable, implantable medical device on the side surface.

2. The medical balloon of claim 1 made of a compliant balloon material.

3. The medical balloon of claim 1 made of a non-compliant balloon material.

4. The medical balloon of claim 1 wherein the protrusions on the balloon are selected from the group consisting of substantially cylindrical, substantially frustoconical, substantially conical, substantially pyramidal and substantially polygonal protrusions.

5. The medical balloon of claim 1 comprising a proximal cone portion, a distal cone portion and a body portion disposed between the proximal and distal cone portions, wherein the protrusions are spaced about the body portion of the balloon.

6. The medical balloon of claim 1 wherein the expandable, implantable medical device is a stent.

7. The medical balloon of claim 1 , wherein the protrusions are linearly aligned.

8. The medical balloon of claim 1 wherein the protrusions have a diameter which is between about 0.01 inches and about 0.06 inches.

9. The medical balloon of claim 8 , wherein the protrusions have a diameter which is between about 0.015 inches and about 0.03 inches.

10. The medical balloon of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of inward protrusions, said inward protrusions being insular relative to the surface of the balloon.

11. The medical balloon of claim 1 , the balloon having a thickness, wherein the thickness of the balloon varies.

12. The medical balloon of claim 1 , the balloon comprising a plurality of layers.

13. The medical balloon of claim 1 , the balloon being formed from a plurality of pieces.

14. A medical balloon mounted on a catheter, said balloon having an outer surface, an inner surface defining an inner space of the balloon, an expanded stated and a collapsed state, wherein the balloon comprises a plurality of outward knobs, said outward knobs being insular relative to the surface of the balloon, and a plurality of inward knob protruding into the inner space of the balloon.

15. The medical balloon of claim 14 made of a compliant balloon material.

16. The medical balloon of claim 14 made of a non-compliant balloon material.

17. The medical balloon of claim 14 wherein the knobs on the balloon are selected from the group consisting of substantially cylindrical, substantially frustoconical, substantially conical, substantially pyramidal and substantially polygonal knobs.

18. The medical balloon of claim 14 comprising a proximal cone portion, a distal cone portion and a body portion disposed between the proximal and distal cone portions, wherein the knobs are spaced about the body portion of the balloon.

19. The medical balloon of claim 14 , wherein the knobs are linearly aligned.

20. The medical balloon of claim 14 , wherein the knobs have a diameter which is between about 0.01 inches and about 0.06 inches.

21. The medical balloon of claim 20 , wherein the knobs have a diameter which is between about 0.015 inches and about 0.03 inches.

22. The medical balloon of claim 14 , the balloon having a thickness, wherein the thickness of the balloon varies.

23. The medical balloon of claim 14 , the balloon comprising a plurality of layers.

24. The medical balloon of claim 14 , the balloon being formed from a plurality of pieces.

25. The medical balloon of claim 1 , the protrusion being formed from a layer of balloon material, the layer being integral with the outer and inner surfaces of the balloon.

26. The medical balloon of claim 14 , the inward and outward knobs being formed from a layer of balloon material, the layer being integral with the outer and inner surfaces of the balloon.
