Abstract

A device and method for use in a human spine to prepare a space between adjacent vertebral bodies and into the vertebral end plates to receive an implantable insert. The device includes a handle, a shaft, and a mounting member at one end of the shaft. An abrading element is mounted on the mounting member and is coupled to a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism is operable to move the abrading element in at least one degree of freedom to create surfaces having predetermined contours in the end plates of the adjacent vertebral bodies.

Claims (21)

1. A method for preparing a disc space between adjacent vertebral bodies of a human spine to receive an insert at least in part therebetween, said method being performed with a device having a mid-longitudinal axis and a rotatable abrading element having an abrading surface, said method comprising the steps of:

activating the device to cause the abrading surface to move;

inserting the abrading surface at least in part between the adjacent vertebral bodies;

contacting the abrading surface of the abrading element against at least one of the adjacent vertebral bodies to remove bone from an end plate of one of the vertebral bodies that lies adjacent the disc space to form a surface on that vertebral body;

rotating the abrading element about an axis different from the mid-longitudinal axis of the device;

removing the abrading surface from the disc space; and

positioning an insert into the space created between the adjacent vertebral bodies.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of contacting includes removing bone from at least a portion of each of the adjacent vertebral bodies to form a surface on the endplate of each of the adjacent vertebral bodies.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of contacting includes forming the surfaces so that they are angled relative to one another.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of contacting includes forming the surfaces so that they are generally parallel relative to one another.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of contacting includes forming the surfaces so that they are each at least in part concave.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of contacting includes forming the surfaces so that they are each at least in part planar.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the insert is an artificial disc.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the insert is a motion preserving device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the insert is a bone graft.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the insert is a fus on implant.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of combining the insert with a fusion promoting material.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the insert includes a hollow portion and the step of combining includes packing the insert with the fusion promoting material.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the fusion promoting material is bone.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of suctioning debris from the space created between the adjacent vertebral bodies.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of irrigating the space created between the adjacent vertebral bodies.
