Abstract

A controller for use in a security system based upon RFID techniques. The controller can use power line carrier communications to communicate with other devices in the security system. The controller can use a modem or wireless module to connect to public networks. Multiple controllers can be used in a system, and the controllers can arbitrate to determine a master controller. The controller contains configuration data and tables that define the relationships between devices in the security system. The controller can receive communications from other devices in the system and can interface with legacy devices previously used with wired security systems. The controller can send messages based upon predetermined events, and can support a remote alerting function.

Claims (73)

1. A first controller for use in a security system including at least a first RFID reader and a peer second controller, the first controller comprising:

a power line carrier communications interface communicating with the RFID reader;

a power supply;

a processor;

memory for storing program code; and

memory for storing configuration information including information about the RFID reader,

wherein the first controller is the master controller for the security system and the first controller communicates as a peer with the second controller included in the security system.

2. The first controller of claim 1 further comprising a modem module adapted for connecting to a public switched telephone network.

3. The first controller of claim 1 further comprising a wireless module adapted for connecting to a commercial mobile radio service network.

4. The first controller of claim 3 , wherein the first controller sends a message using a short message service to a predetermined address when the security system has been disarmed.

5. The first controller of claim 4 , wherein the message contains an indication identifying the code that was used to disarm the security system.

6. The first controller of claim 1 further comprising an interface to a keypad through which the first controller accepts input from a user of the security system.

7. The first controller of claim 1 , wherein the first controller sends a copy of its stored configuration information to the second controller.

The first controller of claim 1 further comprising an arbitration scheme to determine which of the first and second controllers shall be the master controller for the security system, wherein the arbitration scheme includes a self-check test and the first controller ceases to be the master controller if the first controller fails the self-check test, and the second controller becomes the master controller.

9. The first controller of claim 1 , wherein the first controller determines the times at which the first RFID reader transmits wireless communications.

10. The first controller of claim 9 , wherein one criterion for determining the times is whether the security system is in an armed or disarmed state.

11. The first controller of claim 1 , wherein the first controller interprets any messages received by the first RFID reader via wireless communications.

12. The first controller of claim 1 , wherein the security system further includes a keypad designed for use with the security system and wherein the first controller is contained within the keypad.

13. The first controller of claim 12 , wherein the keypad is the keypad described in U.S. Design Pat. No. D389,762 issued on Jan. 27, 1998 to Yorkey.

14. The first controller of claim 1 , wherein the first controller is mechanically mounted to a plate, and wherein the plate is adapted to be mechanically mounted to an outlet.

15. The first controller of claim 1 further comprising a hardwire interface through which the first controller communicates with the RFID reader.

16. The first controller of claim 15 , wherein the security system includes a physical package and wherein the first controller and the RFID reader are contained within the physical package.

17. The first controller of claim 1 further comprising a legacy interface module allowing the first controller to monitor at least one legacy device.

18. The first controller of claim 1 further comprising a battery.

19. The first controller of claim 1 further comprising a display.

20. The first controller of claim 1 , wherein the first controller is mounted to an electrical box in combination with another electrical component.

The first controller of claim 1 , wherein the security system further includes multiple RFID readers and a plurality of transponders with accompanying sensors, the first controller storing information about the RFID readers, transponders, and sensors and associating individual sensors with particular RFID readers.

22. A first controller for use in a security system including at least a first RFID reader and a second controller, the first controller comprising:

a power line carrier communications interface;

a power supply;

a processor;

memory storing program code;

memory storing configuration information; and

an arbitration scheme to determine which of the first and second controllers shall be the master controller for the security system.

23. The first controller of claim 22 , wherein the arbitration scheme is based upon a sequence of numbers used to identify each controller.

24. A controller for use in a security system including at least a first RFID reader, the controller comprising:

a power line carrier communications interface;

a power supply;

a processor;

memory storing program code;

memory storing configuration information; and

a wireless module adapted for connecting to a commercial mobile radio service network,

wherein the controller sends a message to a predetermined remote processor when the security system enters a pre-alert stage, has been disarmed with a normal disarm code, or has been disarmed with a disarm code indicating distress.

25. The controller of claim 24 , wherein the controller sends a message to the predetermined remote processor when the security system has been disarmed with a normal disarm code.

26. The controller of claim 24 , wherein the controller sends a message to the predetermined remote processor when the security system has been disarmed with a disarm code indicating distress.

27. A controller for use in a security system including at least a first RFID reader, the controller comprising:

a power line carrier communications interface;

a power supply;

a processor;

memory storing program code; and

memory storing configuration information,

wherein the controller causes an alert if the first RFID reader detects a jamming signal.

28. A controller for use in a security system including at least a first passive infrared sensor and at least a first RFID reader having motion detection algorithms performing motion detection functions, the controller comprising:

a power line carrier communications interface;

a power supply;

a processor;

memory storing program code; and

memory storing configuration information including a table associating the motion detection functions of the RFID reader with the passive infrared sensor.

The controller of claim 28 , wherein the controller causes an alert if the passive infrared sensor and the said motion detection function of the RFID reader each separately report motion, and the separate reports occur within a predetermined time of each other, and the motion detection function and the passive infrared sensor have been associated with each other in the table.

30. A controller for use in a security system including at least a first RFID reader, the controller comprising:

a power line carrier communications interface;

a power supply;

a processor;

memory storing program code; and

memory storing configuration information including parameters used in the operation of a glass breakage algorithm.

31. The controller of claim 30 , wherein the parameters used in the operation of a glass breakage algorithm are downloaded from a remote processor to the controller.

32. A controller for use in a security system including at least a first RFID reader and an interface module able to interpret the status of wired sensors that use a contact open or contact closed output, the controller comprising:

a power line carrier communications interface;

a power supply;

a processor;

memory storing program code; and

memory storing configuration information,

wherein the controller communicate with the interface module to receive the interpreted status of the wired sensors.
