Film material for air-filled packing cushions
View Patent ↗A machine which inflates and seals pillows in packaging is compact in overall size, can be conveniently operated to produce varied lengths of strips of inflated pillow-type packaging as needed, can begin production of inflated pillow-type strip packaging immediately after being held out of a production cycle for some period of time, and applies a heated sealing element directly to and in sliding contact with a web of film to securely seal the inlet port of an inflated pillow while the pillow is under pressure and as the web of film is continuously and uninterruptedly advanced through the machine.
1. A film material for use in air-filled packing cushions, comprising: two superposed layers of plastic film sealed together to form an inflation channel which extends longitudinally of the material, a plurality of inflatable chambers on a first side of the inflation channel, laterally extending inlet ports interconnecting the chambers and the inflation channel so that pressurized air can be introduced into the chambers through the inflation channel, and a plurality of outlet ports on a second side of the inflation channel opposite the first side, wherein the outlet ports communicate with the inflation channel and extend substantially to a side edge of the film material, and wherein the outlet ports communicate with air external to the film material to permit excess air to escape during inflation of the chambers and sealing of the inlet ports.
2. The film material of claim 1 wherein each of the outlet ports is positioned laterally opposite one of the inlet ports.
3. A film material for use in air-filled packing cushions, comprising: two superposed layers of plastic film sealed together to form an inflation channel which extends in a longitudinal direction near a first edge of the material, a plurality of inflatable chambers positioned between the inflation channel and a second edge of the material, laterally extending inlet ports interconnecting the inflatable chambers and the inflation channel so that pressurized air can be introduced into the chambers through the inflation channel, and a plurality of outlet ports which communicate with the inflation channel and open through the first edge of the material to permit excess air to escape during inflation of the chambers and sealing of the inlet ports.
4. The film material of claim 3 wherein the outlet ports are positioned laterally opposite and aligned with the inlet ports.
5. A film material for use in air-filled packing cushions, comprising: two superposed layers of plastic film sealed together to form an inflation channel which extends longitudinally of the material near a first edge of the material, a plurality of inflatable chambers, inlet ports which interconnect the inflatable chambers and the inflation channel so that pressurized air can be introduced into the chambers through the inflation channel, and a plurality of outlet openings extending laterally from the inflation channel substantially to the first edge of the material to permit excess air to escape from the film material.
6. The film material of claim 5 wherein the inlet ports and the outlet openings are positioned on opposite sides of the inflation channel.
7. The film material of claim 5 wherein inlet ports and outlet openings are spaced longitudinally apart and aligned laterally with each other.
8. The preconfigured film of claim 5 wherein the outlet openings are transversely spaced from the longitudinally extending channel.
9. The preconfigured film of claim 5 wherein the outlet openings are smaller than the inlet ports.
