Abstract

A high molecular weight, water-soluble polymer comprising pendant salicylic acid groups and having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2,000,000 daltons and use of the polymer for clarifying red mud-containing liquors generated in the Bayer process for the recovery of alumina from bauxite.

1. at least one salicylic acid containing monomer selected from the group consisting of 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid, or a salt thereof, 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester, or a salt thereof, O-acetyl4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid, or a salt thereof and O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester, or a salt thereof; and

2. at least one acrylate monomers selected from the group consisting of (meth)acrylic acid and salts thereof and alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid.

2. A high molecular weight, water-soluble polymer comprising pendant salicylic acid groups and having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2,000,000 daltons prepared by the method comprising free radical polymerization of:

1. at least one salicylic acid containing monomer selected from the group consisting of 4- methacrylamidosalicylic acid, or a salt thereof, 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester, or a salt thereof, O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid, or a salt thereof and O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester, or a salt thereof;

2. at least one acrylate monomers selected from the group consisting of (meth)acrylic acid, and salts thereof and alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid and salts thereof; and optionally

3. at least one polymerizable monomers selected from the group consisting of nonionic, anionic, cationic and zwitterionic monomers.

3. The polymer of claim 2 , wherein the polymerizable anionic monomer is 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propanesulfonic acid or a salt thereof.

4. Bayer process liquor clarified with the polymer of claim 2 .

5. The polymer of claim 2 , comprising an emulsion or inverse emulsion polymer.

6. The polymer of claim 5 comprising about 80 to about 99 mole percent sodium or ammonium acrylate and about 1 to about 20 mole percent 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid or a salt thereof, 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester or a salt thereof, O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid or a salt thereof or O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester.

7. The polymer of claim 5 comprising about 88 to about 98 mole percent methyl acrylate, about 1 to about 6 mole percent sodium acrylate and about 1 to about 10 mole percent 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid or a salt thereof, 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester or a salt thereof, O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid or a salt thereof or O-aeetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester.

8. The polymer of claim 5 comprising about 50 to about 98 mole percent sodium or ammonium acrylate, about 1 to about 20 mole percent 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid or a salt thereof, 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester or a salt thereof, O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid or a salt thereof or O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester and about 1 to about 30 mole percent acrylamide or methacrylamide.

9. A flocculating agent used for removing suspended red mud solids in Bayer process liquors comprising a high molecular weight, water-soluble polymer comprising pendant salicylic acid groups and having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2,000,000 daltons prepared by the method comprising free radical polymerization of:

at least one salicylic acid containing monomer selected from the group consisting of 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid, or a salt thereof, 4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester, or a salt thereof, O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid, or a salt thereof and O-acetyl-4-methacrylamidosalicylic acid phenyl ester, or a salt thereof;

at least one acrylate monomers selected from the group consisting of (meth)acrylic acid, and salts thereof and alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid and salts thereof; and optionally

at least one polymerizable monomers selected from the group consisting of nonionic, anionic, cationic and zwitterionic monomers.

10. An agent used for clarifying alumina trihydrate from Bayer process streams comprising a high molecular weight, water-soluble polymer comprising pendant salicylic acid groups and having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2,000,000 daltons prepared by the method comprising free radical polymerization of:
