Abstract

Apparatus and methods for treating tissue at or near a sphincter provide for transluminal introduction of an energy delivery device. The device includes a tissue compression member to compress target tissue at or near the sphincter. A radiofrequency energy source is coupleable to the delivery device to deliver radiofrequency energy to the target tissue. Energy is delivered to heat the tissue to a desired temperature. The desired temperature is selected to induce an injury-healing response or to inducing shrinkage of collagen fibers in the target tissue to thereby reduce laxity in the target tissue.

Claims (25)

1. A method of treating tissue at or near a sphincter comprising the steps of

introducing a thermal energy delivery device having an elongated axis through an esophagus to a targeted tissue site at or near a sphincter, the thermal energy delivery device including a tissue compression member comprising at least two radially extending elements movable toward each other along the axis to capture a volume of tissue therebetween,

moving the radially extending elements of the tissue compression member toward each other to capture a volume of the targeted tissue at or near the sphincter,

compressing the captured volume of targeted tissue at or near the sphincter between the radially extending elements to modify the extracellular fluid content of the captured volume of targeted tissue to alter the targeted tissue's resistance to electrical energy, and

delivering radiofrequency energy to the captured volume of targeted tissue.

2. A method as in claim 1

wherein the delivery of radiofrequency energy induces an injury-healing response.

3. A method as in claim 2

wherein energy is delivered to heat the targeted tissue to 45°–65° C.

4. A method as in claim 3

wherein energy is delivered to heat the targeted tissue to 45°–55° C.

5. An apparatus as in claim 4

wherein energy is delivered to heat the targeted tissue to 45°–50° C.

6. A method as in claim 1 comprising the further step of

delivering energy to the targeted tissue to induce shrinkage of collagen fibers in the target tissue.

7. A method as in claim 6

wherein energy is delivered to heat the targeted tissue to 50°–80° C.

8. A method as in claim 7

wherein energy is delivered to heat the targeted tissue to 60°–70° C.

9. A method as in claim 8

wherein energy is delivered to heat the targeted tissue to 65°–70° C.

10. A method as in claim 1

wherein the sphincter is the lower esophageal sphincter.

11. A method as in claim 1

wherein the tissue compression member is formed of a non-martensitic material.
