Abstract

A lenticular imaging system for viewing printed images on a printed article, the lenticular imaging system creating the illusion of three-dimensional (3-D) images moving or floating across the printed article. The lenticular imaging system of the present invention comprises a substrate with a plurality of images preferably printed on at least one of the surfaces of the substrate and a plurality of spaced-apart convex lenses forming a lenticular lens array applied on top of the plurality of images. The images may be centered directly under each of the lenses of the lens array or shifted in relation to the lenses of the lens array creating the appearance of depth, three-dimensionality and motion to a viewer viewing the printed article.

Claims (50)

1. A printed article comprising:

a substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface;

a graphic image layer including at least one graphic image printed on at least one surface of the substrate; and

a lens array applied to at least one surface of the substrate above the graphic image layer, wherein the lens array comprises a plurality of clear, magnifying, convex lenses.

2. The printed article of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a printable substrate.

3. The printed article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one graphic image is printed on the top surface of the substrate.

4. The printed article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one graphic image is printed on the bottom surface of the substrate.

5. The printed article of claim 1 , wherein the lens array is applied on top of the graphic image layer.

6. The printed article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one graphic image is centered directly under each lens of the lens array.

7. The printed article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one graphic image is images are shifted horizontally in relation to the lenses of the lens array.

8. The printed article of claim 1 , wherein the lens array comprises a clear plastic laminate applied to at least one surface of the substrate above the graphic image layer.

9. The printed article of claim 8 , wherein the clear plastic laminate is formed into the lens array having a plurality of lenses with a semi-circular cross-section.

10. The printed article of claim 9 , wherein the lenses are dots having a semi-circular cross-section.

11. The printed article of claim 9 , wherein the lenses are lines having a semi-circular cross-section.

12. The printed article of claim 9 , wherein the lenses are formed by embossing, impressing, stamping and other forming techniques known to those skilled in the art.

13. A lenticular imaging system comprising:

a substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface;

a graphic image layer including a plurality of graphic images printed on at least one surface of the substrate; and

a lenticular lens array applied to at least one surface of the substrate above the graphic image layer, wherein the lenticular lens array comprises a plurality of clear, magnifying, elongated, parallel, convex lenses.

14. The lenticular imaging system of claim 13 , wherein the lenticular lens array is applied on top of the graphic image layer.

15. The lenticular imaging system of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of graphic images are centered directly under each lens of the lens array.

16. The lenticular imaging system of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of graphic images are shifted horizontally in relation to the lenses of the lens array.

17. The lenticular imaging system of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of clear, magnifying, elongated, parallel, convex lenses are non-focusing lenses.

18. The lenticular imaging system of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of clear, magnifying, elongated, parallel convex lenses are focusing lenses.

19. The printed article of claim 13 , wherein the lenticular lens array comprises a clear plastic laminate applied to at least one surface of the substrate above the graphic image layer.

20. The printed article of claim 19 , wherein the clear plastic laminate is formed into the lenticular lens array having a plurality of lenses with a semi-circular cross-section.

21. The printed article of claim 20 , wherein the lenses are dots having a semi-circular cross-section.

22. The printed article of claim 20 , wherein the lenses are lines having a semi-circular cross-section.

23. The printed article of claim 20 , wherein the lenses are formed by embossing, impressing, stamping and other forming techniques known to those skilled in the art.

24. A method of making a printed article, the steps comprising:

providing a printable substrate with a top surface and a bottom surface;

applying at least one graphic image on at least one surface of the substrate; and

applying a lens array on at least one surface of the substrate above the at least one graphic image, wherein the lens array comprises a plurality of clear, magnifying, convex lenses.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the lens array comprises a clear plastic laminate applied to at least one surface of the substrate on top of the at least one graphic image.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the clear plastic laminate is formed into the lens array having a plurality of lenses with a semi-circular cross-section.

27. The method of claim 26 , wherein the lenses are dots having a semi-circular cross-section.

28. The printed article of claim 26 , wherein the lenses are lines having a semi-circular cross-section.

29. The printed article of claim 26 , wherein the lenses are formed by embossing, impressing, stamping and other forming techniques known to those skilled in the art.

30. A lenticular imaging system comprising:

a substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface;

a graphic image layer including a plurality of graphic images printed on at least one surface of the substrate; and

a lenticular lens array applied above the graphic image layer, wherein the lenticular lens array is formed into a plurality of clear, magnifying lenses having a semi-circular cross-section.

31. A printed article comprising:

a substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface;

a graphic image layer including at least one graphic image printed on at least one surface of the substrate; and

a lens array applied at least one surface of the substrate opposite the graphic image layer, wherein the lens array is formed into a plurality of clear, magnifying, convex lenses.

32. A printed article comprising:

a substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface;

a graphic image layer including at least one graphic image printed on at least one surface of the substrate; and

a clear laminate applied to a portion of the at least one surface of the substrate above the graphic image layer, wherein the clear laminate is formed into a plurality of lenses having a semi-circular cross-section.
