Abstract

A fuel cell has an anode and a cathode with anode enzyme disposed on the anode and cathode enzyme is disposed on the cathode. The anode is configured and arranged to electrooxidize an anode reductant in the presence of the anode enzyme. Likewise, the cathode is configured and arranged to electroreduce a cathode oxidant in the presence of the cathode enzyme. In addition, anode redox hydrogel may be disposed on the anode to transduce a current between the anode and the anode enzyme and cathode redox hydrogel may be disposed on the cathode to transduce a current between the cathode and the cathode enzyme.

Claims (26)

1. An electrically-operated system comprising:

an electrically-operated component; and

a fuel cell operatively coupled to the component for providing electrical power to the component, the fuel cell configured for operation in a biological system and comprising:

an anode;

anode enzyme disposed on the anode, the anode being configured and arranged for electroxidizing an anode reductant in the presence of the anode enzyme;

a cathode spaced from the anode; and

cathode enzyme disposed on the cathode, the cathode being configured and arranged for electroreducing a cathode oxidant in the presence of the cathode enzyme.

2. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , the fuel cell further comprising:

an anode redox polymer disposed on the anode and in contact with the anode enzyme; and

a cathode redox polymer disposed on the cathode and in contact with the cathode enzyme.

3. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically-operated component is a pacemaker.

4. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically-operated component is a nerve growth stimulator.

5. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically-operated component is a nerve stimulator for relief of chronic pain.

6. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically-operated component is a stimulator for regrowth.

7. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically-operated component is a drug-release valve.

8. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically-operated component is a microvalve.

9. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically-operated component is a fluid-flow control valve.

10. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the fuel cell provides an open circuit voltage of 0.5 volts to 1.2 volts.

11. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the fuel cell provides a voltage at the maximum power point of 0.4 volts to 0.8 volts.

12. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the fuel cell provides a volumetric output power density of about 0.5 mW/cm) to about 5 W/cm3.

13. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the fuel cell provides a gravimetric output power density of about 5 mW/g to about 50 W/g.

14. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the fuel cell is generally tubular and has the anode and the cathode extending axially along the length of the fuel cell.

15. The electrically-operated system according to claim 14 , wherein the fuel cell comprises a tubular anode, with the cathode positioned within the tubular anode.

16. The electrically-operated system according to claim 15 , wherein the fuel comprises a tubular cathode positioned within the tubular anode.

17. The electrically-operated system according to claim 1 , wherein the fuel cell is generally planar and comprises a generally planar anode, and a generally planar cathode.

18. The electrically-operated system according to claim 17 , wherein each of the anode and cathode comprises woven material.
