Abstract

Described are mechanisms for verifying configuration information in 2547 BGP VPNs. An originating PE generates a first knowledge digest encoding first configuration information associated with a current set of information advertised for a VRF. The originating PE also generates a second knowledge digest encoding second configuration information associated with cumulative information advertised for the VRF. The originating PE is capable of receiving a message from a user PE, the message including a third knowledge digest encoding third configuration information related to the user VRF. The originating PE is capable of comparing the first knowledge digest to the third knowledge digest and producing a first indication if the third configuration information encoded in the third knowledge digest is not a subset of the first configuration information encoded in the first knowledge digest.

Claims (16)

1. Apparatus operable in a 2547 BGP VPN comprising:

an originating provider edge device (originating PE) for generating a first knowledge digest encoding first configuration information associated with a current set of information advertised for a virtual routing and forwarding engine (advertised VRF);

the originating PE also for generating a second knowledge digest encoding second configuration information associated with cumulative information advertised for the advertised VRF;

the originating PE being capable of receiving a message from a user provider edge device (user PE), the message including a third knowledge digest encoding third configuration information related to the user VRF,

the originating PE being capable of comparing the first knowledge digest to the third knowledge digest and producing a first indication if the third configuration information encoded in the third knowledge digest is not a subset of the first configuration information encoded in the first knowledge digest, and

the originating PE being capable of comparing the second knowledge digest to the third knowledge digest if the first indication is produced, and producing a second indication if the third knowledge digest is not a subset of the second knowledge digest.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first, second, and third knowledge digests are fixed length bit arrays.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the first, second, and third knowledge digests are bloom filters.

4. A method for operation in a 2547 BGP VPN comprising the steps of:

generating by an originating PE a first knowledge digest encoding first configuration information associated with a current set of information advertised for an advertised VRF;

generating by the originating PE a second knowledge digest encoding second configuration information associated with cumulative information advertised for the advertised VRF;

receiving by the originating PE a message from a user PE, the message including a third knowledge digest encoding third configuration information,

comparing by the originating PE the first knowledge digest to the third knowledge digest and producing a first indication if the configuration information encoded in the third knowledge digest is not a subset of the configuration information encoded in the first knowledge digest, and

if the first indication occurs, comparing by the originating PE the second knowledge digest to the third knowledge digest and producing a second indication if the configuration information encoded in the third knowledge digest is not a subset of the configuration information encoded in the second knowledge digest.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the first, second, and third knowledge digests are fixed length bit arrays.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the first, second, and third knowledge digest are bloom filters.
