Abstract

An ingress multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) label switched router (LSR) forwards a set of packets associated with a first set of forwarding equivalence classes (FECs) along a label switched path (LSP) to an egress MPLS LSR. Logic in the ingress MPLS LSR produces an operation and maintenance (OAM) connectivity verification probe message encoding the first set of FECs, and forwards the OAM connectivity verification probe message along the LSP to the egress MPLS LSR. Logic in the egress MPLS LSR produces an encoding of a second set of FECs. Logic in the egress MPLS LSR compares the encoding of the first set of FECs in the connectivity verification probe message to the encoding of the second set of FECs, and produces an indication if the comparison indicates that the first set of FECs is not a subset of the second set of FECs.

Claims (26)

1. A method comprising the steps of:

forwarding by an ingress multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) label switched router (LSR) a set of packets associated with a first set of forwarding equivalence classes (FECs) along a label switched path (LSP) to an egress MPLS LSR;

producing by the ingress MPLS LSR an operation and maintenance (OAM) connectivity verification probe message encoding the first set of FECs;

forwarding the OAM connectivity verification probe message along the LSP to the egress MPLS LSR;

producing by the egress MPLS LSR an encoding of a second set of FECs;

comparing by the egress MPLS LSR the encoding of the first set of FECs in the connectivity verification probe message to the encoding of the second set of FECs, and

producing by the egress MPLS LSR an indication if the comparison indicates that the first set of FECs is not a subset of the second set of FECs.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of producing an OAM connectivity verification probe message encodes the first set of FECs into a bloom filter, and wherein the step of producing an encoding of a second set of FECs encodes the second set of FECs into a bloom filter.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the first set of FECs includes a single FEC, and wherein the second set of FECs includes a single FEC.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of:

when the indication is produced, saving by the egress MPLS LSR time-to-live (TTL) fields from MPLS labels stacked above each verification probe message as each verification probe message is received, and comparing successive TTLs to determine the location of an MPLS LSR that caused the indication to be produced.

5. A method comprising the steps of:

forwarding by an ingress multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) label switched router (LSR) a set of packets having a first set of forwarding equivalence classes (FECs) along an label switched path (LSP) to an egress MPLS LSR;

producing by the ingress MPLS LSR an operation and maintenance (OAM) connectivity verification probe message encoding the first set of FECs;

forwarding the OAM connectivity verification probe message along the LSP from the ingress MPLS LSR to the egress MPLS LSR, the egress MPLS LSR including logic for producing an encoding of a second set of FECs, the egress MPLS LSR also including logic for comparing the encoding of the first set of FECs in the connectivity verification probe message to the encoding of the second set of FECs, and for producing an indication if the comparison indicates that the first set of FECs is not a subset of the second set of FECs.

The method of claim 5 wherein the step of producing an OAM connectivity verification probe message includes the step of encoding the first set of FECs into a bloom filter, and wherein the logic in the egress MPLS LSR for producing an encoding of a second set of FECs encodes the second set of FECs into a bloom filter.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the first set of FECs includes a single FEC, and wherein the second set of FECs includes a single FEC.

8. A method comprising the steps of:

receiving by an egress multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) label switched router (LSR) an operation and maintenance (OAM) connectivity verification probe message encoding a first set of forwarding equivalence classes (FECs) from an ingress MPLS LSR;

producing by the egress MPLS LSR an encoding of a second set of FECs;

comparing by the egress MPLS LSR the encoding of the second set of FECs to the encoding of the first set of FECs; and

producing an indication if the comparison indicates that the first set of FECs is not a subset of the second set of FECs.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the connectivity verification probe message encodes the first set of FECs in a bloom filter, and wherein the step of producing an encoding of a second set of FECs encodes the second set of FECs in a bloom filter.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the first set of FECs includes a single FEC, and wherein the second set of FECs includes a single FEC.

11. The method of claim 8 further comprising the step of:

when the indication is produced, saving by the egress MPLS LSR time-to-live (TTL) fields from MPLS labels stacked above each verification probe message as each verification probe message is received, and comparing successive TTLs to determine the location of an MPLS LSR that caused the indication to be produced.
