Abstract

A print media receiving unit is disclosed. In one embodiment, the print media receiving unit comprises a platform that includes a surface adapted to receive a print medium comprising a spine. The spine may be disposed in a spine receiving portion in the platform. A location detection system capable of determining a location of a selected region of the print medium may be associated with the platform.

Claims (43)

1. An interactive print media system comprising:

a print media receiving unit comprising:

(a) a platform including a spine receiving portion, wherein the platform is foldable about the spine receiving portion,

(b) borders located on the platform at one or more extremes of page travel away from the spine receiving portion and the borders defining a recessed area,

(c) a stylus coupled to the platform via a cable,

(d) a location detection system capable of determining a location of a selected region of the print medium, wherein the location detection system includes a first antenna in the platform and a second antenna in the stylus, and

(e) a socket in the platform, wherein the socket is capable of receiving a memory device; and

a multi-page book for use on the platform, wherein the multi-page book comprises a spine to be received in the spine receiving portion, and a page with a printed symbol for playing an interactive game using the print medium, a printed symbol for adjusting the volume of the print media receiving unit, and a printed symbol for spelling words in the print medium,

wherein the print media receiving unit is programmed to

(i) play an interactive game using the print medium when the printed symbol for playing an interactive game using the print medium is selected with the stylus,

(ii) adjust the volume of the print media receiving unit when the printed symbol for adjusting the volume of the print media receiving unit is selected by the stylus, and

(iii) spell words in the print medium when the printed symbol for spelling words in the print medium is selected by the stylus.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the second antenna is a receiving antenna and the first antenna is a transmitting antenna.

3. The system of claim 1 further comprising finger wells in the platform.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the print media receiving unit is programmed to prompt the user to select an icon to indicate the page of the multi-page book that is being displayed.

5. The system of claim 1 further comprising the memory device.

6. The system of claim 1 further comprising the memory device, wherein the memory device is a data cartridge.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the print media receiving unit is programmed to allow a user to drag the stylus across a word and have the print media receiving unit sound out the letters of the word.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the multi-page book includes highlighted regions that are selectable by the user.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the print media receiving unit further comprises a speech synthesizer in the platform.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the antennas are RF antennas.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the platform comprises a speaker.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the multi-page book comprises a spiral spine.

13. An interactive print media system comprising:

a print media receiving unit comprising

(a) a platform,

(b) borders located on the platform defining a recessed area,

(c) a stylus coupled to the platform via a cable,

(d) a location detection system capable of determining a location of a selected region of the print medium, wherein the location detection system includes a first antenna in the platform and a second antenna in the stylus, and

(e) a socket in the platform, wherein the socket is capable of receiving a memory device; and

a multi-page book for use on the platform, wherein the multi-page book comprises a printed symbol for playing an interactive game using the print medium, a printed symbol for adjusting the volume of the print media receiving unit, and a printed symbol for spelling words in the print medium,

wherein the print media receiving unit is programmed to

(i) play an interactive game using the print medium when the printed symbol for playing an interactive game using the print medium is selected with the stylus,

(ii) adjust the volume of the print media receiving unit when the printed symbol for adjusting the volume of the print media receiving unit is selected by the stylus, and

(iii) spell words in the print medium when the printed symbol for spelling words in the print medium is selected by the stylus.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the second antenna is a receiving antenna and the first antenna is a transmitting antenna.

15. The system of claim 13 further comprising finger wells in the platform.

16. The system of claim 13 wherein the print media receiving unit is programmed to prompt the user to select an icon to indicate the page of the multi-page book that is being displayed.

17. The system of claim 13 further comprising the memory device.

18. The system of claim 13 further comprising the memory device, wherein the memory device is a data cartridge.

19. The system of claim 13 wherein the print media receiving unit is programmed to allow a user to drag the stylus across a word and have the print media receiving unit sound out the letters of the word.

20. The system of claim 13 wherein the multi-page book includes highlighted regions that are selectable by the user.

21. The system of claim 13 wherein the print media receiving unit further comprises a speech synthesizer in the platform.
