Abstract

An intraocular lens for inhibiting posterior capsular opacification, or secondary cataract, includes an optic having a periphery provided with at least two sharp edges which lie radially spaced from each other with respect to the optical axis of the lens optic.

Claims (24)

1. An intraocular lens for implanting in a human eye, comprising:

(a) a lens optic having: (1) opposite anterior and posterior optical surfaces, and a posterior optic periphery disposed outside of the posterior optical surface; and (2) an optical axis extending through said anterior optical surface and through said posterior optical surface; and

(b) at least first and second edges formed in a region of said optic periphery wherein, said second edge is located radially outwardly of said first edge, said first edge being sharp and being defined by a first intersection of said posterior optical surface and a first peripheral wall, the first peripheral wall extends in a first direction about an entirety of the optic periphery and from said first intersection toward said anterior surface, the posterior optical surface extending radially inward of the first intersection, and said second edge is defined by a second intersection of a second peripheral wall and a third peripheral wall.

2. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , further comprising locating means attached adjacent said second edge, said locating means operable to position and maintain said intraocular lens in said human eye in a correct location.

3. The intraocular lens of claim 2 , wherein said locating means comprises one or more haptics.

4. The intraocular lens of claim 3 , wherein the haptics are configured to cause the optic to vault in the direction of the posterior optical surface when implanted in the eye.

5. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of said second edge has a curved radius.

6. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein said lens has a greatest thickness between said anterior and posterior surfaces.

7. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein said first peripheral wall lies substantially parallel to said optical axis.

8. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein said second edge is sharp.

9. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein said second peripheral wall lies substantially parallel to at least a portion of said posterior surface.

10. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein said first peripheral wall lies parallel to said optical axis.

11. An intraocular lens for implanting in a human eye, comprising:

(a) a lens optic having

(i) an anterior surface, and

(ii) a first posterior surface and a second posterior surface, said second posterior surface being disposed in a posterior optic periphery;

(iii) a first peripheral wall and a second peripheral wall, both being disposed in the posterior optic periphery, and

(iv) an optical axis extending through said anterior surface and through said first posterior surface; and

(b) at least first and second edges formed in the posterior optic periphery wherein, said second edge is located radially outwardly of said first edge,

said first edge being defined by a first intersection of said first posterior surface and said first peripheral wall, the first peripheral wall extending from said first intersection toward said anterior surface, the first posterior surface extending radially inward of the first intersection, and

said second edge is defined by a second intersection of the second peripheral wall and the second posterior surface.

12. The lens of claim 11 , wherein the first and second peripheral walls are non-image-forming surfaces.

13. The lens of claim 12 , wherein the second posterior surface is planar.

14. The intraocular lens of claim 10 , further comprising one or more haptics configured to cause the optic to vault in the direction of the first posterior surface when the intraocular lens is implanted in the eye.
