Abstract

A golf ball comprising a core comprised of a polymer containing an acid group fully-neutralized by an organic acid or a salt, a cation source, or a suitable base thereof; and a cover layer; wherein the golf ball has a COR of no less than about 0.830 and an initial velocity of greater than 255 ft/s.

Claims (21)

1. A golf ball comprising:

a core comprised of a polymer containing an acid group, an organic acid or a salt, and sufficient cation source, or a suitable base thereof to fully neutralize the acid groups of the polymer; and

a cover layer;

wherein the golf ball has an outer diameter of between about 1.62 inches and about 1.68 inches, a COR of no less than about 0.830, a weight of between about 47 g and about 60 g, and an initial velocity of greater than 255 ft/s.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a COR of greater than about 0.835.

3. The golf ball of claim 2 , wherein the golf ball has a COR of greater than about 0.840.

4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cation source comprises metal cations of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, barium, lead, tin, zinc, or aluminum; the organic acid comprises aliphatic organic acids, aromatic organic acids, saturated mono-functional organic acids, unsaturated mono-functional organic acids, or multi-unsaturated mono-functional organic acids; and the salt of organic acids comprises the salts of barium, lithium, sodium, zinc, bismuth, chromium, cobalt, copper, potassium, strontium, titanium, tungsten, magnesium, cesium, iron, nickel, silver, aluminum, tin, calcium, stearic, behenic, erucic, oleic, linoelic, palmitic, pelargonic, lauric, or dimerized derivatives.

5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover layer comprises ionomeric copolymers and terpolymers, ionomer precursors, thermoplastics, thermoplastic elastomers, polybutadiene rubber, balata, grafted metallocene-catalyzed polymers, non-grafted metallocene-catalyzed polymers, single-site polymers, high-crystalline acid polymers and their ionomers, or cationic ionomers.

6. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has an outer diameter of no greater than about 1.68 inches and a weight of between about 47 g and about 45.9 g.

7. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has an outer diameter of no greater than about 1.68 inches and a weight of between about 47 g and about 44.9 g.

8. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises ionomeric copolymers and terpolymers, ionomer precursors, thermoplastics, thermoplastic elastomers, grafted metallocene-catalyzed polymers, non-grafted metallocene-catalyzed polymers, single-site polymers, high-crystalline acid polymers and their ionomers, cationic ionomers, and mixtures thereof.

9. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core has a diameter of about 1.53 inches or greater.

10. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core comprises two or more layers.

11. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover is injection molded, compression molded, or reaction injection molded over the core.

12. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover comprises an inner cover layer and an outer cover layer.

13. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover layer comprises a polyurethane material, a polyurea material, a polyurethane-urea hybrid material, or a polyurea-urethane hybrid material.

14. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core has a compression of no greater than about 80 and comprises a center and an outer core layer, at least one of which comprises an organosulfur or the metal salt thereof.

15. A golf ball comprising:

a core comprised of a center and an outer core layer comprising a polymer containing an acid group, cation source, or a suitable base thereof to fully neutralize the acid groups of the polymer; and

a cover layer;

wherein the golf ball has a COR of no less than about 0.830 and an initial velocity of greater than 255 ft/s, the core has a compression of no greater thin about 80, and at least one of the center and outer core layer comprises an organosulfur or the metal salt thereof.
