Abstract

A wireless communication network may include a plurality of mobile nodes each including at least one wireless transceiver, a directional antenna and an omni-directional antenna connected to the at least one wireless transceiver, and a controller for controlling the at least one wireless transceiver. The controller may also be for controlling the at least one wireless transceiver, establishing an omni-directional communication link with another mobile node, and determining a link quality value for the omni-directional communication link. The controller may also establish a directional communication link with the other mobile node if the link quality value for the omni-directional communication link is greater than a quality threshold.

Claims (45)

1. A wireless communication network comprising:

a plurality of mobile nodes each comprising at least one wireless transceiver, a directional antenna and an omni-directional antenna connected to said at least one wireless transceiver, and a controller for controlling said at least one wireless transceiver;

said controller comprising

a time slot scheduling unit to schedule time slots to establish communication links with neighboring mobile nodes, and

a traffic coordination unit for requesting additional time slots from, and allocating additional time slots to, other mobile nodes based upon link communications demand;

said controller also for

establishing an omni-directional communication link with another mobile node,

determining a link quality value for the omni-directional communication link, and

establishing a directional communication link with said other mobile node if the link quality value for the omni-directional communication link is greater than a quality threshold.

2. The wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein the quality threshold comprises a first quality threshold; and wherein said controller discontinues the directional communication link if the link quality value falls below a second quality threshold lower than the first quality threshold.

3. The wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said controller determines the link quality value based upon a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR).

4. The wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said controller determines the link quality value based upon a packet reception error value.

5. The wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said controller comprises a first time slot unit for scheduling a semipermanent time slot within a time frame for establishing the directional communication link with said other node.

6. The wireless communication network of claim 5 wherein said first time slot unit leaves at least one available time slot within the time frame; and wherein said controller further comprises a second time slot unit for scheduling the at least one available time slot for establishing the directional communication link with said other mobile node based upon link communication demand.

7. The wireless communication network of claim 5 wherein said controller further comprises an interference detection unit to detect interference in time slots for communication with neighboring mobile nodes.

8. The wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said controller further comprises an antenna aiming unit to aim said directional antenna toward said other mobile node during communication therewith.

9. The wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said directional antenna comprises a phased array antenna.

10. A wireless communication network comprising:

a plurality of mobile nodes each comprising at least one wireless transceiver, a directional antenna and an omni-directional antenna connected to said at least one wireless transceiver, and a controller for controlling said at least one wireless transceiver;

said controller comprising

an antenna aiming unit for aiming said directional antenna,

a time slot scheduling unit to schedule time slots to establish communication links with neighboring mobile nodes, and

a traffic coordination unit for requesting additional time slots from, and allocating additional time slots to, other mobile nodes based upon link communications demand;

said controller also for

establishing an omni-directional communication link with another mobile node,

determining a link quality value for the omni-directional communication link,

establishing a directional communication link with said other mobile node if the link quality value for the omni-directional communication link is greater than a first quality threshold, and

discontinuing the directional communication link if the link quality value falls below a second quality threshold lower than the first quality threshold.

11. The wireless communication network of claim 10 wherein said controller determines the quality value based upon a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR).

12. The wireless communication network of claim 10 wherein said controller determines the quality value based upon a packet reception error value.

13. The wireless communication network of claim 10 wherein said controller comprises a first time slot unit for scheduling a semi-permanent time slot within a time frame for establishing the directional communication link with said other node.

14. The wireless communication network of claim 13 wherein said first time slot unit leaves at least one available time slot within the time frame; and wherein said controller further comprises a second time slot unit for scheduling the at least one available time slot for establishing the directional communication link with said other mobile node based upon link communication demand.

15. The wireless communication network of claim 13 wherein said controller further comprises an interference detection unit to detect interference in time slots for communication with neighboring mobile nodes.

16. The wireless communication network of claim 10 wherein said directional antenna comprises a phased array antenna.

17. A communication method for a wireless communication network comprising a plurality of mobile nodes, the method comprising:

scheduling time slots to establish communication links with neighboring mobile nodes;

establishing an omni-directional communication link between a pair of the mobile nodes;

determining a link quality value for the omni-directional communication link;

establishing a directional communication link between the pair of mobile nodes if the link quality value for the omni-directional communication link is greater than a quality threshold; and

requesting additional time slots from, and allocating additional time slots to, other mobile nodes based upon link communications demand.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the quality threshold comprises a first quality threshold; and further comprising discontinuing the directional communication link if the link quality value falls below a second quality threshold lower than the first quality threshold.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein determining comprises determining the link quality value based upon a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR).

20. The method of claim 17 wherein determining comprises determining the link quality value based upon a packet reception error value.
