Abstract

A method and a system for displaying images are provided. In the method, a pixel is provided that includes a layer of ferroelectric material and a layer of liquid crystal material. A first electric field is momentarily applied to the pixel to electrically polarize the ferroelectric layer to a first polarization. The first polarization is then used to maintain the liquid crystal material in a first orientation corresponding to a first apparent brightness of the pixel.

Claims (30)

1. A method for displaying an image, the method comprising:

providing a pixel including a layer of ferroelectric material, a mirror layer, and a layer of liquid crystal material;

momentarily applying a first electric field to the pixel to electrically polarize the ferroelectric layer to a first polarization; and

using the first polarization to maintain the liquid crystal material in a first orientation corresponding to a first apparent brightness of the pixel such that light propagates through the layer of liquid crystal material, reflects from the mirror layer and propagates back through the layer of liquid crystal material to exhibit the first apparent brightness;

wherein the first polarization maintains the liquid crystal material in the first orientation notwithstanding the momentary application of the first electric field.

2. The method of claim 1 , additionally comprising:

momentarily applying a second electric field to the pixel to alter the electrical polarization of the ferroelectric layer to a second polarization; and

using the second polarization to maintain the liquid crystal material in a second orientation corresponding to a second apparent brightness of the pixel, different from the first apparent brightness;

wherein the second polarization maintains the liquid crystal material in the second orientation notwithstanding momentary application of the second electric field.

3. The method of claim 1 , in which:

the pixel additionally includes a pixel electrode, and the layer of ferroelectric material is located between the mirror layer and the pixel electrode; and

momentarily applying the first electric field to the pixel includes momentarily applying a drive signal between the mirror layer and the pixel electrode to provide the first electric field.

4. The method of claim 3 , additionally comprising allowing the mirror layer to float electrically after the momentary application of the first electric field to the pixel.

5. The method of claim 1 , additionally comprising using the first polarization to set the liquid crystal material to the first orientation.

6. A system for displaying an image, the system comprising pixels each including:

a layer of ferroelectric material;

a layer of liquid crystal material;

a pixel electrode;

a mirror electrode; and

a pixel drive circuit operable to apply an electric field momentarily to the pixel to polarize the ferroelectric material to a first polarization, the first polarization maintaining the liquid crystal material in a first orientation corresponding to a first brightness of the pixel;

wherein the layer of ferroelectric material but not the layer of liquid crystal is located between the pixel electrode and the mirror electrode;

wherein, in operation, light propagates through the layer of liquid crystal material, reflects from the mirror electrode and propagates back through the layer of liquid crystal material to exhibit the first brightness.

7. The system of claim 6 , in which:

each pixel additionally includes a pixel electrode and a common electrode; and the layer of ferroelectric material and the layer of liquid crystal material are located between the pixel electrode and the common electrode.

8. The system of claim 6 , in which:

each pixel additionally includes a pixel electrode and

the pixel drive circuit is operable to apply a voltage difference momentarily between the pixel electrode and the mirror electrode to apply the electric field to the layer of ferroelectric material to polarize the layer of ferroelectric material.

9. The system of claim 8 , in which:

each pixel additionally includes a common electrode; and the layer of liquid crystal material is located between the mirror electrode and the common electrode.

10. The system of claim 6 , in which the first polarization additionally sets the liquid crystal material to the first orientation.
