Abstract

An instrument( 10 ) for use in performing arthroplasty is provided. The instrument( 10 ) includes a first portion( 11 ) adapted to prepare a convex surface( 64 ) on the head( 5 ) of the long bone( 4 ). The instrument ( 10 ) also includes a second portion ( 13 ) adapted to prepare an elongated cavity ( 62 ) or a third portion ( 14 ) adapted to prepare a central support surface ( 56 ) on the head ( 5 ) of the long bone ( 4 ), or both second portion ( 13 ) and the third portion ( 14 ). The third portion ( 14 ) and the second portion ( 13 ) are operably associated with the first portion( 11 ).

Claims (65)

1. A reamer for use in performing arthroplasty, said reamer comprising:

a first cutting structure having an inner concave surface that (i) defines a first cavity, and (ii) terminates distally so as to define an inner surface edge, said inner concave surface including a first cutting feature that is spaced apart from said inner surface edge, said first cutting structure defining an axis of rotation thereof;

a second cutting structure positioned within said first cavity and secured to said first cutting structure, said second cutting structure configured to prepare a support surface; and

an elongated member fixed in relation to said first cutting structure and at least partially positioned in said first cavity, said elongated member configured to prepare an elongated cavity.

2. The reamer of claim 1 , wherein said first cutting structure defines a plurality of spaced apart internal walls, at least one of the internal walls defining the first cutting feature.

3. The reamer of claim 1 , wherein said first cutting structure is configured to be generally hemispherical-shaped.

4. The reamer of claim 1 , wherein said first cutting structure includes a body that defines a generally circular periphery, the generally circular periphery defining an additional cutting surface.

5. The reamer of claim 1 , wherein said inner surface edge is configured to encircle said elongated member.

6. The reamer of claim 1 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a body having a passageway structure defining a passageway that extends through said body, and

said passageway structure includes a passageway edge configured to cut bone.

7. The reamer of claim 1 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a plurality of cutting teeth that are configured to encircle said elongated member, and

said first cutting feature being spaced apart from said plurality of cutting teeth.

8. A reamer for use in performing arthroplasty, said reamer comprising:

a first cutting structure having (i) an inner concave surface that defines a first cavity and terminates distally so as to define an inner surface edge, (ii) an outer convex surface, said inner concave surface including a first cutting feature that is spaced apart from inner surface edge, said first cutting structure defining an axis of rotation thereof;

a second cutting structure secured to said first cutting structure, said second cutting structure configured to prepare a support surface; and

an elongated member fixed in relation to said first cutting structure and at least partially positioned in said first cavity, said elongated member configured to prepare an elongated cavity.

9. The reamer of claim 8 , wherein said second cutting structure includes a plurality of blades.

10. The reamer of claim 8 , wherein said second cutting structure is welded to said first cutting structure.

11. The reamer of claim 8 , wherein said first cutting structure defines a plurality of spaced apart internal walls, at least one of the internal walls defining the first cutting feature.

12. The reamer of claim 8 , wherein said inner surface edge is configured to encircle said elongated member.

13. The reamer of claim 8 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a body having a passageway structure defining a passageway that extends through said body, and said passageway structure includes a passageway edge configured to cut bone.

14. The reamer of claim 8 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a plurality of cutting teeth that are configured to encircle said elongated member, and

said first cutting feature being spaced apart from said plurality of cutting teeth.

15. A reamer for use in performing arthroplasty, said reamer comprising:

a first cutting structure having an inner concave surface that defines a first cavity and terminates distally in an inner surface edge, said inner concave surface including a first cutting surface that is spaced apart from said inner surface edge, said first cutting structure defining an axis of rotation thereof, and said inner surface edge defining a plurality of cutting teeth;

a second cutting structure secured to said first cutting structure, said second cutting structure configured to prepare a support surface; and

an elongated member fixed in relation to the first cutting structure and at least partially positioned in said first cavity, said elongated member configured to prepare an elongated cavity.

16. The reamer of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of teeth comprise a plurality of saw teeth.

17. The reamer of claim 15 , wherein said first cutting structure defines a plurality of spaced apart internal walls, at least one of the internal walls defining the first cutting surface.

18. The reamer of claim 15 , wherein said inner surface edge is configured to encircle said elongated member.

19. The reamer of claim 15 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a body having a passageway structure defining a passageway that extends through said body, and

said passageway structure includes a passageway edge configured to cut bone.

20. A reamer for use in performing arthroplasty, said reamer comprising:

a first cutting structure having an inner concave surface that defines a first cavity and terminates distally in an inner surface edge, said inner concave surface including a first cutting feature that is spaced apart from said inner surface edge, said first cutting structure defining an axis of rotation thereof;

a second cutting structure secured to said first cutting structure, said second cutting structure configured to prepare a support surface, at least a portion of the support surface being planar; and

an elongated member fixed in relation to the first cutting structure and at least partially positioned in said first cavity, said elongated member configured to prepare an elongated cavity.

21. The reamer of claim 20 , wherein said elongated member is tapered.

22. The reamer of claim 20 , wherein said elongated member includes a plurality of flutes, the plurality of flutes configured to prepare the elongated cavity.

23. The reamer of claim 20 , wherein said elongated member is configured to be generally cylindrical-shaped.

24. The reamer of claim 20 , wherein said elongated member is cannulated.

25. The reamer of claim 20 , further comprising a shank opposed to said elongated member.

26. The reamer of claim 20 , wherein said inner surface edge is configured to encircle said elongated member.

27. The reamer of claim 20 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a body having a passageway structure defining a passageway that extends through said body, and

said passageway structure includes a passageway edge configured to cut bone.

28. The reamer of claim 20 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a plurality of cutting teeth that are configured to encircle said elongated member, and

said first cutting feature being spaced apart from said plurality of cutting teeth.

29. A reamer for use in performing arthroplasty, said reamer comprising:

a first cutting structure having an inner concave surface that defines a first cavity and terminates distally so as to define an inner surface edge, said inner concave surface including a first cutting feature that is spaced apart from said inner surface edge, said first cutting structure defining an axis of rotation thereof; and

an elongated member fixed in relation to the first cutting structure and at least partially positioned in said first cavity, said elongated member configured to prepare an elongated cavity.

30. The reamer of claim 29 , wherein said elongated member has a generally cylindrical shape.

31. The reamer of claim 29 , wherein said first cutting structure defines a plurality of spaced apart internal walls, at least one of the internal walls defining the first cutting feature.

32. The reamer of claim 29 , wherein said inner surface edge is configured to encircle said elongated member.

33. The reamer of claim 29 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a body having a passageway structure defining a passageway that extends through said body, and

said passageway structure includes a passageway edge configured to cut bone.

34. The reamer of claim 29 , wherein:

said first cutting structure includes a plurality of cutting teeth that are configured to encircle said elongated member, and

said first cutting feature being spaced apart from said plurality of cutting teeth.
