7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said one of the virtual data streams is transmitted in a vertical blanking interval.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said one of the virtual data streams is contains enhanced TV data related to a video data stream.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the timing information comprises information for synchronizing the enhanced TV data with playback of the video data stream at the client.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the playback of the video data stream at the client is delayed from a broadcast time of the video data stream.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the rate at which the virtual time base advances includes one of adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base advances forward, adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base advances backward, and adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base is paused.

12. A method comprising:

generating by a server computer a plurality of data streams; and

outputting from the server computer the data streams for transmission to a client, at least one of said data streams comprising:

a plurality of virtual data streams that are individually addressable and individually selectable by the client, one of the virtual data streams comprising a virtual time base which advances at an adjustable rate relative an absolute time base which advances in realtime; and

timing information for adjusting the rate at which the virtual time base advances, the timing information specified relative to the virtual time base.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said one of the virtual data streams is an MPEG stream.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein said one of the virtual data streams is transmitted using an Internet Protocol.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein said one of the virtual data streams is transmitted in a vertical blanking interval.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein said one of the virtual data streams contains enhanced TV data related to a video information stream.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the timing information comprises information for synchronizing the enhanced TV data with playback of the video data stream at the client.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the playback of the video data stream at the client is delayed from a broadcast time of the video data stream.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein said one of the virtual data streams comprises a trigger data stream comprising time-sensitive information for synchronization of events communicated by the virtual data streams.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein said virtual data streams are initialized based on an absolute time.

21. The method of claim 12 , wherein said virtual data streams move forward after initialization in real time.

22. The method of claim 12 , wherein adjusting the rate at which the virtual time base advances includes one of adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base advances forward, adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base advances backward, and adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base is paused.

23. A method comprising:

receiving a video data stream and an enhancement data stream, the enhancement data stream comprising:

a virtual data stream comprising a virtual time base which advances at an adjustable rate relative an absolute time base which advances in realtime, and

timing information for adjusting the rate at which the virtual time base advances, the timing information specified relative to the virtual time base;

buffering the video data stream, the virtual data stream, and the timing information, wherein the buffered timing information is configured for adjusting the virtual time base of the buffered virtual data stream;

playing back the buffered video data stream; and

playing back enhanced content related to the buffered virtual data stream, wherein the playing back of the enhanced content is adjusted relative to the playing back of the buffered video data stream according to the buffered timing information.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein adjusting the rate at which the virtual time base advances includes one of adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base advances forward, adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base advances backward, and adjusting the rate such that the virtual time base is paused.

25. An apparatus comprising a computer storing software, that when executed by the computer, causes the apparatus to perform:

receiving a video data stream and an enhancement data stream, the enhancement data stream comprising:

a virtual data stream comprising a virtual time base which advances at an adjustable rate relative an absolute time base which advances in realtime, and

timing information for adjusting the rate at which the virtual time base advances, the timing information specified relative to the virtual time base;

buffering the video data stream, the virtual data stream, and the timing information, wherein the buffered timing information is configured for adjusting the virtual time base of the buffered virtual data stream;

playing back the buffered video data stream; and

playing back enhanced content related to the buffered virtual data stream, wherein the playing back of the enhanced content is adjusted relative to the playing back of the buffered video data stream according the buffered timing information.
