Method of making a modified unbleached pulp for lyocell products
View Patent ↗In accordance with the present invention, lyocell products can be made with unbleached pulps resulting in products with high amounts of hemicellulose and high amounts of lignin as compared to conventional lyocell products. The lyocell products of the present invention are advantageously less expensive to produce but retain the desirable strength of conventional lyocell products.
1. A method for making a modified unbleached Kraft pulp, comprising:
obtaining an unbleached Kraft pulp having cellulose, at least 7% hemicellulose, and at least 2% Klason lignin; and
modifying the Kraft pulp by reducing the D.P. of the cellulose of said Kraft pulp to produce a modified Kraft pulp having at least 7% hemicellulose, at least 2% Klason lignin, and cellulose, wherein the cellulose has an average D.P. of greater than 400 to 1100, wherein said modified Kraft pulp is suitable for lyocell fiber manufacture.
2. The method of claim 1 , comprising reducing the D.P. with at least one of an acid, or steam explosion.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the acid is hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising swelling the cellulose in an alkaline solution.
5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising removing the alkaline solution and treating the cellulose with a cellulolytic enzyme.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the cellulolytic enzyme comprises an endogluconase enzyme.
7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising washing the modified unbleached Kraft pulp.
8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising dissolving the modified unbleached Kraft pulp in a solvent.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the solvent comprises a tertiary amine oxide.
10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the solvent comprises a dimethylsulfoxide, a dimethylacetamide, a dimethylformamide, or a caprolactan derivative.
11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the solvent comprises N-methyl-morpholine-N-oxide.
