Sorting electronic messages using attributes of the sender address
View Patent ↗Systems and methods for sorting electronic messages using attributes of senders or of sender addresses. An electronic messaging server sorts electronic messages using attributes associated with the senders or sender addresses of the electronic messages. The sender addresses and associated attributes are stored in an accept list. A sorting module uses the accept list to sort the electronic messages into various folders. The sorting module can also access other data sources, such as a contact list, to assist in sorting the electronic messages. The attributes can be determined independently of the user or can be set directly by the user. The attributes can also identify a status of a sender such as whether the sender is authorized, unauthorized, or unconfirmed.
1. In a system that includes an electronic messaging server that provides electronic messaging services to one or more users, a method for sorting electronic messages for a user, the method comprising:
for each sender that sends electronic messages to a user, assigning attributes to a sender address of each sender such that each sender address is associated with one or more attributes, wherein the sender addresses and the one or more attributes are stored in a first list, and wherein assigning the one or more attributes to the sender address (1) maintains the sender address in its original form, and (2) does not require the one or more attributes to be user-defined;
receiving an electronic message from a particular sender at the electronic messaging server; and
sorting the electronic message into at least one folder based on the one or more attributes assigned to a particular sender address of the particular sender.
2. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein assigning attributes to a sender address of each sender such that each sender address is associated with one or more attributes further comprises:
setting an authorized attribute if the sender is authorized;
setting an unauthorized attribute if the sender is unauthorized; and
setting an unconfirmed attribute if the sender is unconfirmed.
3. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein assigning attributes to a sender address of each sender such that each sender address is associated with one or more attributes further comprises issuing a challenge to the particular sender.
4. A method as defined in claim 3 , further comprising:
receiving a response from the particular sender that received the challenge;
setting an authorized attribute for a sender address of the particular sender if the particular sender responds correctly to the challenge.
5. A method as defined in claim 4 , further comprising setting an unauthorized attribute for the sender address of the particular sender if the particular senders does not respond to the challenges or responds incorrectly to the challenge.
6. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising entering a sender address in the first list when an electronic message is sent to the sender address, wherein an authorized attribute of the sender address is set.
7. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising associating one or more attributes in the first list with a domain.
8. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising sorting the electronic message using a contact list of the user.
9. A method as defined in claim 8 , further comprising changing at least one attribute of a particular sender in the first list according to changes made to the particular sender in the contact list.
10. A method as defined in claim 8 , further comprising at least one of:
setting an unauthorized attribute of the particular sender if the particular sender is removed from the contact list; and
setting an authorized attribute of the particular sender if the particular sender is added to the contact list.
11. A method as defined in claim 1 wherein the first list is stored on a user computer or on the electronic messaging server.
12. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code stored thereon, the computer readable program code having computer-executable instructions for performing the method of claim 1 .
13. In a system that includes an electronic messaging server that provides electronic messaging services to one or more users, wherein a method for sorting electronic messages for a user, the method comprising:
receiving an electronic message from a sender at an electronic messaging server;
accessing a first list using a sender address of the sender to identify one or more attributes associated with the sender address of the sender, the sender address being maintained in its original form in the first list wherein the one or more attributes are not required to be user-defined; and
sorting the electronic message into one or more folders according to the one or more attributes associated with the sender address.
14. A method as defined in claim 13 , wherein accessing a first list using a sender address of the sender to identify one or more attributes associated with the sender address of the sender further comprises:
issuing a challenge to the sender if the sender address is not in the first list; adding the sender address to the first list; and
setting an unconfirmed attribute of the sender.
15. A method as defined in claim 14 , further comprising:
setting an authorized attribute of the sender address if the sender successfully responds to the challenge; and
setting an unauthorized attribute of the sender if the sender does not successfully respond to the challenge.
16. A method as defined in claim 13 , wherein receiving an electronic message from a sender at an electronic messaging server further comprises identifying a user address that identifies the first list of the user.
17. A method as defined in claim 13 , further comprising setting attributes in the first list using a contact list of the user.
18. A method as defined in claim 17 , wherein setting attributes in the first list using a contact list of the user further comprises:
setting an authorized attribute for each sender address included in the contact list;
setting an unauthorized attribute for a particular sender address in the first list when the particular sender is removed from the contact list; and
setting an authorized attribute of a certain sender address when the certain sender address is added to the contact list.
19. A method as defined in claim 13 , further comprising setting one or more attributes in the first list without direct input from a user.
20. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code stored thereon, the computer readable program code having computer-executable instructions for performing the method of claim 13 .
21. In a system that receives electronic messages from multiple senders, wherein the electronic messages are intended for one or more users of the system, a method for sorting electronic messages addressed to a user of the system, the method comprising:
in a first list that has an entry for each sender address, setting one or more attributes for each sender address, the sender address being maintained in its original form in the first list wherein the one or more attributes are not required to be user-defined;
receiving an electronic message from a particular sender that is addressed to a user;
entering a sender address of the particular sender into the first list if the sender address is not in the first list and setting an unconfirmed attribute for the sender address of the particular sender; and
sorting the electronic message into one or more folders using the one or more attributes associated with the sender address of the particular sender of the electronic message.
22. A method as defined in claim 21 , wherein setting one or more attributes for each sender address further comprises setting at least one attribute based on actions of the user.
23. A method as defined in claim 22 , wherein setting at least one attribute based on actions of the user further comprises one or more of:
setting an authorized attribute for a sender address when the user sends an electronic message addressed with the sender address;
setting an authorized attribute for a sender address when the user adds the sender to a contact list of the user; and
setting an unauthorized attribute for a sender address when the user deletes the sender from the contact list of the user.
24. A method as defined in claim 21 , wherein entering a sender address of the particular sender into the first list if the sender address is not in the first list further comprises sending a challenge to the particular sender.
25. A method as defined in claim 24 , further comprising:
receiving a response from the particular sender;
setting an authorized attribute of the sender address for the particular sender if the response is correct; and
setting an unauthorized attribute of the sender address for the particular sender if the response is incorrect.
26. A method as defined in claim 24 , further comprising setting a source attribute to identify how the sender address was included in the first list.
27. A method as defined in claim 24 , further comprising updating the first list by reviewing the contact list to determine if senders have been added or removed from the contact list.
28. A method as defined in claim 24 , wherein sending a challenge to the particular sender further comprises:
directing the particular sender to a web site; and
requiring the particular sender to enter a confirmation code at the web site.
29. A method as defined in claim 28 , further comprising displaying a graphical representation of the confirmation code at the web site such that a person can enter the confirmation code while a computer cannot read the confirmation code.
30. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code stored thereon, the computer readable program code having computer-executable instructions for performing the method of claim 21 .
