Abstract

Described herein are a group of degradable, thermoplastic polymers, which are able to change their shape after an increase in temperature. Their shape memory capability enables bulky implants to be placed in the body through small incisions or to perform complex mechanical deformations automatically. The shape memory polymers are preferably biocompatible and can be biodegradable or non-degradable polymers. Preferably, the biodegradable polymer has a linear degradation rate. In a specifically preferred embodiment, the suture is formed of biodegradable polymer capable of forming a self-tightening knot. In a most preferred embodiment, the suture is used to close a wound or body scission.

Claims (17)

1. A suture comprising a multifilament formed of a material comprising a shape memory polymer composition wherein the composition comprises:

a) at least one hard segment which has a T trans between −40 and 270° C.,

b) at least one soft segment which has a T trans at least 10° C. lower than that of the hard segment(s), which is linked to at least one hard segment,

wherein filaments in the multifilament are substantially differently programmed concerning at least one of a degree of stretching, a degree of torsion and a degree of bending.

2. The suture of claim 1 further comprising an agent selected from the group consisting of therapeutic, diagnostic and prophylactic agents.

3. The suture of claim 2 wherein the agent is selected from the group consisting of a disinfectant and an antibiotic.

4. The suture of claim 1 , wherein the suture has a linear mass-Degradation rate.

5. The suture of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the hard and soft segments is a thermoplastic polymer.

6. The suture of claim 1 , wherein the ratio by weight of the hard and soft segments is between about 5:95 and 95:5.

7. The suture of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises at least one biodegradable region selected from the group consisting of polyhydroxy acid, poly(ether ester), polyorthoester, poly(amino acid), synthetic poly(amino acid), polyanhydride, polycarbonate, poly(hydroxyalkanoate), and poly(ε-caprolactone).

8. The suture of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises at least one biodegradable linkage selected from the group consisting of ester group, carbonate group, amide group, anhydride group, and orthoester group.

9. The suture of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is completely degradable.

10. The suture of claim 1 further comprising: a coating which alters the degradation of the shape memory polymer.

11. The suture of claim 1 , wherein the degree of crystallinity of the polymer or at least one of the hard and soft segments is between 3% and 80%.

12. The suture of claim 1 , wherein the tensile modulus of the polymer below the T trans of the soft segment is between 50 MPa and 2 GPa.

13. The suture of claim 1 wherein the suture is selected from the group consisting of a button and a traversing suture.

14. A suture of claim 1 capable of forming a self-tightening knot.
