Abstract

Tear and fatique resistant SEEPS gels useful for making liners for orthotics and prosthetic uses.

Claims (37)

1. A gel liner comprising a composite article of a gelatinous elastomer composition, G, in contact with one or more of a selected substrate material, M, said gelatinous elastomer composition comprising:

(i) 100 parts by weight of one or more of a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene), and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-styrene) and

(ii) about 300 to about 1,600 parts by weight of a plasticizing oil; in combination with or without

(iii) a selected amount of one or more polymers or copolymers of poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), poly(styrene-butadiene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylene), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene, wherein said selected copolymer is a linear, radial, star-shaped, branched or multiarm copolymer, wherein n is greater than one; and wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , G n G n M n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n G n M n G n , a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with or without one or more M n ; wherein when n is a subscript of M, n is the same or different selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramics, synthetic resin, synthetic fibers or refractory materials; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; said composite article having the shape of a liner for lower extremity socket insert above the knee amputee prosthesis formed by injection molding, extruding, spinning, casting, or dipping of said gel.

2. A gel liner comprising a composite article of a gelatinous elastomer composition, G, in contact with one or more of a selected substrate material, M, said gelatinous elastomer composition comprising:

(i) 100 parts by weight of one or more of a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene), and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene) and

(ii) about 300 to about 1,600 parts by weight of a plasticizing oil; in combination with or without

(iii) a selected amount of one or more polymer or copolymer of poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), poly(styrene-butadiene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylene), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene, wherein said selected copolymer is a linear, radial, star-shaped, or multiarm copolymer, and n is an integer greater than one; wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , G n G n M n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n G n M n G n , a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with or without one or more M n ; wherein when n is a subscript of M, n is the same or different selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramics, synthetic resin, synthetic fibers or refractory materials; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; said composite article having the shape of a liner for lower extremity socket insert below the knee amputee prosthesis, formed by injection molding, extruding, spinning, casting, or dipping of said gel.

3. A gel liner comprising a composite article of a gelatinous elastomer composition, G, in contact with one or more of a selected substrate material, M, said gelatinous elastomer composition comprising:

(i) 100 parts by weight of one or more of a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene, and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene); and

(ii) from about 300 to about 1,600 parts by weight of an plasticizing oil; in combination with or without

(iii) a selected amount of one or more selected polymer or copolymer selected from the group consisting of poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) poly(styrene-butadiene), poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene), poly(styrene-isoprene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-E-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylene), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene, wherein said selected copolymer is a linear, radial, branched, star-shaped, or multiarm copolymer; and n is an integer greater than one, wherein said gelatinous elastomer compositions characterized by a gel rigidity of from about 20 to about 800 gram Bloom; wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , G n G n M n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n G n M n G n , a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with or without one or more M n ; wherein when n is a subscript of M, n is the same or different selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramics, synthetic resin, synthetic fibers or refractory materials; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; said composite article having the shape of a liner for lower extremity below the knee amputee prosthesis cuff suspension interface formed by injection molding, extruding, spinning, casting, or dipping of said gel.

4. A gel liner comprising a composite article of a gelatinous elastomer composition, G, in contact with one or more of a selected substrate material, M, said gelatinous elastomer composition comprising:

(i) 100 parts by weight of one or more of a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene), and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene); and

(ii) from about 300 to about 1,600 parts by weight of an plasticizing oil, in combination with or without

(iii) a selected amount of one or more polymers or copolymers of poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), poly(styrene-butadiene), poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene), poly(styrene-isoprene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styreneethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylene), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene, wherein said selected copolymer is a linear, branched, radial, star-shaped, or multiarm copolymer; and n is an integer greater than one; wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , G n G n M n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n G n M n G n , a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with or without one or more M n , wherein when n is a subsaipt of M, n is the same or different selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramics, synthetic resin, synthetic fibers or refractory materials; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; said composite article having the shape of a liner for lower extremity above knee, socket insert, suction suspension with locking mechanism amputee prosthesis formed by injection molding, extruding, spinning, casting, or dipping of said gel.

5. A gel liner of claim 1 , 2 , 3 , or 4 , wherein said one or more selected (iii) copolymers include poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/ethylene-propylene-styrene).

6. A gel liner of claim 1 or 4 , wherein said one or more selected (iii) copolymers include poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene).

A gel liner of claim 1 , 2 , 3 , or 4 , wherein said one or more (iii) copolymer(s) include (styrene-butadiene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene/styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), and poly(styrene-ethylene).

8. A gel liner of claim 2 , 3 , or 4 wherein said composite article having a shape for upper extremity amputee prosthesis.

9. A gel liner comprising a composite article of a gelatinous elastomer composition, G, in contact with one or more of a selected substrate material, M, said gelatinous elastomer composition comprising:

(i) 100 parts by weight of one or more of a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer mldblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene), and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), and

(ii) selected amounts of one or more plasticizing oil(s) sufficient to achieve gel rigidities of from about 20 gram to about 1,800 gram Bloom; and in combination with or without

(iii) a selected amount of one or more polymers or copolymers of poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), poly(styrene-butadiene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylene), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene, wherein said selected copolymer is a linear, radial, star-shaped, branched or multiarm copolymer, wherein n is greater than one; wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , G n G n M n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n Y, G n G n M n G n M n G n , a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with one or more M n ; wherein when n is a subscript of M, n is the same or different selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramics, synthetic resin, synthetic fibers or refractory materials; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; said composite article in the shape of a liner selected from a lower extremity socket insert above the knee amputee prosthesis, a lower extremity socket insert below the knee amputee prosthesis, a lower extremity below the knee amputee prosthesis cuff suspension interface, a lower extremity below knee socket insert suction suspension with locking mechanism amputee prosthesis, lower extremity above knee socket insert suction suspension with locking mechanism amputee prosthesis, and upper extremity amputee prosthesis; said liner formed by injection molding, extruding, spinning, casting, or dipping of said gel.

10. A gel liner comprising a composite article of a gelatinous elastomer composition, G, in contact with one or more of a selected substrate material, M, said gelatinous elastomer composition comprising:

(i) 100 parts by weight of one or more of a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene), and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene and

(ii) selected amounts of one or more plasticizing oil(s) sufficient to achieve gel rigidities of from about 20 gram to about 1,800 gram Bloom; in combination with or without

(iii) a selected amount of one or more polymers or copolymers of poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), poly(styrene-butadiene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylen), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene, wherein said selected copolymer is a linear, radial, star-shaped, branched or multiarm copolymer, wherein n is greater than one; and wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , M n G n G n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n G n M n G n , a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with or without one or more M n ; wherein when n is a subscript of M, n is the same or different selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramics, synthetic resin, synthetic fibers or refractory materials; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; said composite article having the shape of a liner for lower extremity below knee socket insert, suction suspension with locking mechanism amputee prosthesis formed by injection molding, extruding, spinning, casting, or dipping of said gel.

11. A gel liner comprising a composite article of a gelatinous elastomer composition, G, in contact with one or more of a selected substrate material, M, said gelatinous elastomer composition comprising:

(i) 100 parts by weight of one or more of a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene). and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene, and

(ii) selected amounts of one or more plasticizing oil(s) sufficient to achieve gel rigidities of from about 20 gram to about 1,800 gram Bloom; in combination with or without

(iii) a selected amount of one or more polymers or copolymers of poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), poly(styrene-butadiene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), styrene-butadiene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene/styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylene), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene, wherein said selected copolymer is a linear, radial, star-shaped, branched or multiarm copolymer, wherein n is greater than one; wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , M n G n G n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n G n M n G n , a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with or without one or more M n ; wherein when n is a subscript of M, n is the same or different selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramics, synthetic resin, synthetic fibers or refractory materials; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; and wherein when n is a subscript of G, n denotes the same or a different gel rigidity; said composite article in the shape of a liner selected from a lower extremity socket insert above the knee amputee prosthesis, a lower extremity socket insert below the knee amputee prosthesis, a lower extremity below the knee amputee prosthesis cuff suspension interface, a lower extremity below knee socket insert suction suspension with locking mechanism amputee prosthesis, lower extremity above knee socket insert suction suspension with ioddng mechanism amputee prosthesis, and upper extremity amputee prosthesis; said liner formed by injection molding, extruding, spinning, casting, or dipping of said gel.

12. A gel liner according to claims 1 , 9 , 10 , and 11 , wherein one or more

said is made from a hydrogenated styrene isoprene/butadiene styrene block copolymer(s) selected from a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) and poly(1,3-butadiene), a hydrogenated styrene block polymer with hydrogenated elastomer midblocks of poly(2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene), and a poly(styrene-ethylene-ethylene-propylene-styrene);

wherein said (ii) selected amount of one or more plasticizing oil(s) being sufficient to achieve gel rigidities of about 100 gram Bloom to about 800 gram Bloom;

wherein said one or more (iii) polymers and copolymers selected from poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), poly(styrene-butadiene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) n , poly(styrene-isoprene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene) n , poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene) n , low viscosity poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), (styrene-butadiene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene/styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene-propylene/styrene-ethylene-propylene-styrene), poly(styrene-ethylene), polystyrene, polybutylene, poly(ethylene-propylene), poly(ethylene-butylene), polypropylene, or polyethylene;

wherein said composite formed from the combination G n G n , G n M n , G n M n M n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , G n M n G n , M n G n M n , G n G n M n , M n M n M n G n , M n M n M n G n M n , M n G n G n M n , G n M n G n G n , G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n M n , G n G n M n G n M n , G n M n G n M n M n , M n G n M n G n M n G n , G n G n M n M n G n , G n G n M n G n M n G n , and a sequential addition or a permutation of one or more of said G n with or without one or more M n ; wherein said liner being a prosthesis of a lower extremity socket insert above the knee amputee prosthesis, a lower extremity socket insert below the knee amputee prosthesis, a lower extremity below the knee amputee prosthesis with cuff suspension interface, a lower extremity below knee socket insert-suction suspension with locking mechanism amputee prosthesis, a lower extremity above knee socket insert-suction suspension with locking mechanism amputee prosthesis and an upper extremity amputee prosthesis.
