Abstract

Inorganic particle/polymer composites are described that involve chemical bonding between the elements of the composite. In some embodiments, the composite composition includes a polymer having side groups chemically bonded to inorganic particles. Furthermore, the composite composition can include chemically bonded inorganic particles and ordered copolymers. Various electrical, optical and electro-optical devices can be formed from the composites.

Claims (25)

1. A composite composition comprising chemically bonded inorganic particles and a blend of distinct polymers wherein the blend of distinct polymers comprises an ordered copolymer or a self-organizing physical polymer blend.

2. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the blends of distinct polymers comprise ordered copolymers.

3. The composite composition of claim 2 wherein the ordered copolymers are block copolymers.

4. The composite composition of claim 3 wherein the block copolymers comprise polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene-block-polyacrylamide, polysiloxane-block-polyacrylate/polyacrylic acid, or mixtures thereof.

5. The composite composition of claim 2 wherein the ordered copolymers comprise graft copolymers, comb copolymers, star-block copolymers, dendrimers or mixtures thereof.

6. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the blends of distinct polymers comprise physical mixtures of chemically distinct polymers.

7. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particles are chemically bonded to a subset of the distinct polymers of the blend of distinct polymers.

8. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the composite is localized within boundaries on a surface of a substrate.

9. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particles comprise metal/metalloid particles, metal/metalloid oxides, metal/metalloid nitrides, metal/metalloid carbides, metal/metalloid sulfides, metal/metalloid phosphates, or mixtures thereof.

10. A structure comprising the composite of claim 1 .

11. The structure of claim 10 wherein the structure comprises a fiber.

12. The structure of claim 10 wherein the structure comprises a film.

13. The structure of claim 12 wherein the inorganic particles are localized within boundaries on the film.

14. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particles have an average diameter less than about 500 nm.

15. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particles have an average diameter from about 2 nm to about 100 nm.

16. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein effectively no particles have a diameter greater than about 4 times the average diameter.

17. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein at least about 95 percent of the particles have a diameter greater than about 40 percent of the average diameter and less than about 160 percent of the average diameter.

18. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the blend of distinct polymers comprises polyamide, polycarbonate, polyimide, polyphosphazene, polyurethane, heterocyclic polymer, polyacrylamide, polysiloxane, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, conjugated polymers, electrically conducting polymers and mixtures thereof.

19. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein the blend of distinct polymers comprises polyacrylates, poly acrylic acid or combinations thereof.

20. The composite composition of claim 1 having greater than about 50 weight percent inorganic particles.

21. The composite composition of claim 1 wherein a linker is bonded between the inorganic particle and the blend of distinct polymers.

22. A composite composition comprising chemically bonded inorganic particles and an ordered copolymer.

23. The composite composition of claim 22 wherein the ordered copolymer comprises a block copolymer.
