Abstract

A multi-flanged earplug is provided, comprising a stem, a rounded flange positioned at a first end of the stem, and at least a second flange positioned between the first end portion of the stem and an opposing second end portion of the stem. In one embodiment, at least a portion of the first flange has a shape that is generally is generally convex with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem, while at least a portion of the second flange has a shape that is generally concave with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem. In another embodiment, an outer circumference portion of the second flange has an increased thickness relative to an inner, annular portion of the second flange. In another embodiment, an outer circumference portion of the second flange is provided with a protruding ridge.

Claims (44)

1. A multi-flange earplug, comprising:

a stem;

a first flange positioned at a first end portion of the stem, at least a portion of the first flange having a shape on a side of the first flange facing a tip of the first end portion of the stem that is generally convex with respect to a tip of the first end portion of the stem, the first flange having a shape on a second side of the first flange facing away from the tip of the first end portion of the stem that defines a skirt cavity extending from a perpendicular plane relative to the longitudinal axis of said stem, the longitudinal axis referring to a line between the rear end of the stem and the tip, between a portion of said flange skirt and said stem; and

a second flange positioned between the first flange and a second end portion of the stem, at least a portion of the second flange having a shape on a side of the second flange facing a tip of the first end portion of the stem that is generally concave with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem, the second flange having a shape on a second side of the second flange facing away from the tip of the first end portion of the stem that defines a skirt cavity extending from a perpendicular plane relative to the longitudinal axis of said stem, the longitudinal axis referring to a line between the rear end of the stem and the tip, between a portion of said flange skirt and said stem.

The multi-flange earplug in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising a third flange positioned between the second flange and the second end portion of the stem, the third flange having a shape that is generally concave with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem, the third flange having a shape on a second side of the third flange facing away from the tip of the first end portion of the stem that defines a skirt cavity extending from a perpendicular plane relative to the longitudinal axis of said stem between a portion of said flange skirt and said stem.

3. The multi-flange earplug of claim 2 , wherein said third flange has a generally uniform thickness in a cross sectional area between a peripheral portion of said third flange and a portion of said third flange proximate to said stem.

The multi-flange earplug of claim 2 , wherein the array of the first, second and third flanges are spaced apart and have sufficient outer diameters to form a single substantially straight line of construction so as to be in at least point contact with an edge of each of the first, second and third flanges.

5. The multi-flange earplug of claim 4 , wherein the half angle defined between said line of construction and between a longitudinal axis of the stem is between about 10 degrees and about 16 degrees.

6. The multi-flange earplug of claim 5 , wherein the half angle defined between said line of construction and between said longitudinal axis of the stem is between about 12 and about 14 degrees.

7. The multi-flange earplug in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first flange defines between about 45 degrees to about 55 degrees of a chordally sectioned hollow spherical body whose external surface is, at a majority of points thereon, equidistant from the single geometric center thereof.

8. The multi-flange earplug in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first flange extends outwardly and rearwardly from the first end portion of the stem to define an approximately uniform skirt on at least a substantial portion of the rearward region of the first flange.

9. The multi-flange earplug of claim 1 , wherein the stem member is tapered outwardly from the first end portion of the stem to a point rearward from the first flange, and wherein the stem is tapered inwardly from said point rearward from the first flange to the second end portion of the stem.

10. The multi-flange earplug of claim 1 , wherein the stem member includes a bore having an opening at the second end portion of the stem, and wherein the bore is dimensioned so as to receive a cord.

11. The multi-flange earplug of claim 1 , wherein the earplug generally comprises a resilient polymeric material.

12. The multi-flange earplug of claim 11 , wherein the earplug generally comprises a thermoplastic elastomer having a Shore A durometer of between about 13 and 17.

13. The multi-flange earplug of claim 12 , wherein the stem member includes a bore having an opening at the second end portion of the stem, and wherein the earplug further includes a stem stiffener disposed within said bore.

14. A multi-flange earplug, comprising:

a stem having a first end portion configured for insertion into a user's ear;

a first flange having a rounded shape, the first flange positioned at a first end portion of the stem; and

a second flange positioned between the first flange and a second end portion of the stem, the second flange having an outer, circumferential portion that has an increased thickness relative to an inner annular portion of the second flange and the second flange having a shape on a side of the second flange facing a tip of the first end portion of the stem that is generally concave with respect to a tip of the first end portion of the stem.

15. The multi-flanged earplug of claim 14 , wherein said circumferential portion of said second flange is rounded.

16. The multi-flanged earplug of claim 15 , wherein said circumferential portion of said second flange forms a ridge of material about a circumference of the second flange, the ridge of material having a substantially circular cross-section.

17. The multi-flanged earplug of claim 14 , wherein the first flange has a generally hemispherical shape that is generally convex with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem, and wherein the second has a shape that is generally concave with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem.

The multi-flanged earplug of claim 14 , further comprising a third flange positioned between the second flange and the second end portion of the stem, the third flange having an outer, circumferential portion that has an increased thickness relative to an inner annular portion of the second flange.

19. The multi-flanged earplug of claim 18 , wherein said circumferential portion of said third flange is rounded.

20. The multi-flanged earplug of claim 19 , wherein said circumferential portion of said third flange forms a ridge of material about a circumference of the third flange, the ridge of material having a substantially circular cross-section.

The multi-flange earplug of claim 18 , wherein the array of the first, second and third flanges are spaced apart and have sufficient outer diameters to form a single substantially straight line of construction so as to be in at least point contact with an edge of each of the first, second and third flanges.

22. The multi-flange earplug of claim 21 , wherein the half angle defined between said line of construction and between a longitudinal axis of the stem is between about 10 degrees and about 16 degrees.

23. The multi-flange earplug of claim 22 , wherein the half angle defined between said line of construction and between said longitudinal axis of the stem is between about 12 and about 14 degrees.

24. The multi-flange earplug in accordance with claim 14 , wherein the first flange defines between about 45 degrees to about 55 degrees of a chordally sectioned hollow spherical body whose external surface is, at a majority of points thereon, equidistant from the single geometric center thereof.

25. The multi-flange earplug in accordance with claim 14 , wherein the first flange extends outwardly and rearwardly from the first end portion of the stem to define an approximately uniform skirt on at least a substantial portion of the rearward region of the first flange.

26. The multi-flange earplug of claim 14 , wherein the stem member is tapered outwardly from the first end portion of the stem to a point rearward from the first flange, and wherein the stem is tapered inwardly from said point rearward from the first flange to the second end portion of the stem.

27. The multi-flange earplug of claim 14 , wherein the stem member includes a bore having an opening at the second end portion of the stem, and wherein the bore is dimensioned so as to receive a cord.

28. The multi-flange earplug of claim 14 , wherein the earplug generally comprises a resilient polymeric material.

29. The multi-flange earplug of claim 28 , wherein the earplug generally comprises a thermoplastic elastomer having a Shore A durometer of between about 13 and 17.

30. The multi-flange earplug of claim 29 , wherein the stem member includes a bore having an opening at the second end portion of the stem, and wherein the earplug further includes a stem stiffener disposed within said bore.

31. The multi-flange earplug of claim 1 , wherein said second flange has a generally uniform thickness in a cross sectional area between a peripheral portion of said second flange and a portion of said second flange proximate to said stem.

32. A multi-flange earplug, comprising:

a stem;

a first flange positioned at a first end portion of the stem, at least a portion of the first flange having a shape on a side of the first flange facing a tip of the first end portion of the stem that is generally convex with respect to a tip of the first end portion of the stem, the first flange having a shape on a second side of the first flange facing away from the tip of the first end portion of the stem that defines a free space between the second side of the first flange and a surface of the stem; and

a second flange positioned between the first flange and a second end portion of the stem, at least a portion of the second flange having a shape on a side of the second flange facing a tip of the first end portion of the stem that is generally concave with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem, the second flange having a shape on a second side of the second flange facing away from the tip of the first end portion of the stem that defines a free space between the second side of the second flange and a surface of the stem.

The multi-flange earplug in accordance with claim 32 , further comprising a third flange positioned between the second flange and the second end portion of the stem, the third flange having a shape that is generally concave with respect to the tip of the first end portion of the stem, the third flange having a shape on a second side of the third flange facing away from the tip of the first end portion of the stem that defines a free space between the second side of the third flange and a surface of the stem.

The multi-flange earplug of claim 33 , wherein the array of the first, second and third flanges are spaced apart and have sufficient outer diameters to form a single substantially straight line of construction so as to be in at least point contact with an edge of each of the first, second and third flanges.

35. The multi-flange earplug of claim 34 , wherein the half angle defined between said line of construction and between a longitudinal axis of the stem is between about 10 degrees and about 16 degrees.
