Abstract

A channel characteristic of a transmission channel between a remote terminal and a central office is estimated by collecting information in the remote terminal, transferring this information from the remote terminal to the central office and matching the received information at the central office with a channel and remote terminal simulation model. The values of parameters of the latter simulation model, which define the channel characteristic to be estimated, are determined as a result of the matching process. The information collected by the remote terminal typically is information that is automatically collected by the remote terminal for operational purposes. such as equalizer setting and, bit allocation.

Claims (39)

1. A method to estimate a transmission channel characteristic of a transmission channel between a central office and a remote terminal, said method comprising the steps of:

a. collecting at said remote terminal channel measurements performed at a number of frequencies;

b. transferring said channel measurements from said remote terminal to said central office; and

c. estimating said channel characteristic on the basis of said transferred channel measurements.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said channel measurements are collected on-line, and wherein said method further comprises the step of multiplexing said channel measurements with user data.

3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein said channel measurements are collected off-line during a test phase, and wherein said method further comprises the steps of interrupting transfer of user data over said transmission channel, and bringing said remote terminal and said central office into said test phase.

4. A method according to claim 2 , wherein said channel measurements comprise attenuation measurements.

5. A method according to claim 2 , wherein said channel measurements comprise phase rotation measurements.

6. A method according to claim 2 , wherein said channel measurements comprise noise measurements.

7. A method according to claim 2 , wherein said channel measurements comprise signal to noise ratio measurements.

8. A method according to claim 2 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises bridged tap locations.

9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises bridged tap lengths.

10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises disturber locations.

11. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises radio frequency interference.

12. A method according to claim 1 wherein said channel characteristic comprises line attenuation.

13. A remote terminal suitable for communication with a central office via a transmission channel therebetween, said terminal having a channel information gathering component for collecting channel measurements performed at a number of frequencies,

said remote terminal further including a channel measurement transmission component which transfers said channel measurements to said central office so that said channel measurements are available at said central office for the purpose of estimating a channel characteristic of said transmission channel.

14. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel measurements are collected on-line, and wherein said remote terminal is further adapted to multiplex said channel measurements with user data.

15. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel measurements are collected off line.

16. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel measurements comprise attenuation measurements.

17. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel measurements comprise phase rotation measurements.

18. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said c channel measurements comprise noise measurements.

19. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel measurements comprise signal to noise ratio measurements.

20. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises bridged tap locations.

21. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises bridged tap lengths.

22. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises disturber locations.

23. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises radio frequency interference.

24. A remote terminal according to claim 13 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises line attenuation.

25. A transmission channel characteristic estimating unit for estimating a transmission channel characteristic of a transmission channel between a central office and a remote terminal,

said unit comprising a channel characteristic estimating component which estimates said channel characteristic on the basis of channel measurements performed at a number of frequencies and received from said remote terminal.

26. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel measurements comprise attenuation measurements.

28. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel measurements comprise noise measurements.

29. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel measurements comprise signal to noise ratio measurements.

30. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises bridged tap locations.

31. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises bridged tap lengths.

32. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises disturber locations.

33. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises radio frequency interference.

34. An estimating unit according to claim 25 , wherein said channel characteristic comprises line attenuation.
