Abstract

A method of determining the analyte concentration of a test sample is described. A temperature gradient is introduced in the test sample and infrared radiation detectors measure radiation at selected analyte absorbance peak and reference wavelengths. Reference and analytical signals are detected. In the presence of the selected analyte, parameter differences between reference and analytical signals are detectable. These parameter differences, having a relationship to analyte concentration, are measured, correlated, and processed to determine analyte concentration in the test sample. Accuracy is enhanced by inducing a periodically modulated temperature gradient in the test sample. The analytical and reference signals may be measured continuously and the parameter difference integrated over the measurement period to determine analyte concentration.

Claims (19)

1. A method of analyzing a test sample using a radiation detector, the method comprising:

heating or cooling the test sample;

responsive to the heating or cooling, measuring a reference signal emitted by the sample;

further responsive to the heating or cooling, measuring an analytical signal emitted by the sample;

comparing the reference and analytical signals; and

transmitting a result of the comparison as an electrical signal for further precessing.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein comparing the reference and analytical signals further comprises determining phase difference information between the analytical and reference signals.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising deducing an analyte concentration of the sample based on the phase difference information.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein deducing the analyte concentration further comprises correlating the phase difference information with known information regarding analyte concentration and phase.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the analytical signal is measured at one or more predefined wavelengths.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the analytical signal is measured at a plurality of predefined wavelengths separated by at least one predefined wavelength interval, and wherein at least one of the predefined wavelength intervals is defined by analyte absorbance peaks.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the reference signal is measured at one or more predefined wavelengths separated by at least one predefined wavelength interval.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein at least one of the predefined wavelength intervals is defined by optical absorbance properties of the test sample.

9. A method of determining the concentration of an analyte in a medium, the method comprising:

changing a temperature of the medium at at least a surface thereof;

responsive to the changing, measunng the radiation emitted from the medium at an analytical wavelength related to the analyte, resulting in an analytical signal;

further responsive to the changing, measuring the radiation emitted from the medium at at least one reference wavelength, resulting in at least one reference signal;

comparing the analytical signal with at least one of the reference signals; and

deducing from the comparison the concentration of the analyte in the medium.
