Abstract

A method and computer-program product are provided for distinguishing packets sent in successive packet groups. The packet groups are related to each other. The method includes providing an identification point to a connection of a communications network; receiving a sequence number associated with a first packet, which is part of a first group of packets; and receiving a packet-group-length parameter that denotes the number of packets in the first group of packets. Other embodiments are described herein.

Claims (30)

1. One or more computer-storage media have computer-readable instructions embodied thereon for performing a method for distinguishing packets sent in related packet groups through a connection in a communications network environment, comprising:

providing an identification point within said connection, wherein the identification point is not at either endpoint of the connection;

receiving a first sequence number associated with a first packet from the identification point, wherein said first packet is part of a first group of packets;

receiving a packet-group-length parameter that denotes the number of packets in said first group of packets from the identification point wherein receiving said packet-group-length parameter includes determining a protocol associated with said first packet;

multiplying said packet-group-length parameter by a segment-size parameter; and

adding the product of the multiplying to said first sequence number.

One or more computer-storage media having embodied thereon computer-readable instructions for performing a method of identifying a target packet within a second packet group of packets that are related to a first group of packets traveling through a communications network, said method comprising:

at a point within the network that is not at either endpoint, retrieving a first sequence number from a first packet associated with said first group of packets, wherein said first packet is an actual in-use data packet not interjected into said network for the purpose of being identified;

determining a length of said first packet group by retrieving a packet-group-length identifier and multiplying said packet-group-length identifier by a segment-size parameter; and

adding said determined length to said retrieved sequence number to identify a second sequence number corresponding to a desired second packet.

One or more computer-storage media have computer-readable instructions embodied thereon for performing a method for passively measuring the Round-Trip Time (RTT) of packet groups traveling in a connection of a communications network using a packet-identification point within said connection that is not at either endpoint, said method comprising:

identifying a first packet within a first group of packets, wherein said first group of packets is related to a second group of packets traveling through said connection and wherein said first packet is an actual in-use data packet not interjected into said network for the purpose of measuring its RTT;

providing a first timestamp associated with said first packet, wherein said first time stamp is associated with when said first packet travels past said packet-identification point;

retrieving a first sequence number associated with said first packet;

determining a length of said first packet group, wherein determining said length of said first packet group comprises retrieving a packet-group-length identifier and multiplying said packet-group-length identifier by a segment-size parameter;

adding said determined length to said retrieved sequence number to identify a second packet;

providing a second timestamp associated with when said second packet travels past said packet-identification point, said second packet sent incident to a valid communication of said first packet; and

calculating a difference between said second timestamp and said first timestamp to compute said RTT.

4. The media of claim 3 , further comprising updating said RTT computation.

5. The media of claim 4 , wherein updating said RTT computation comprises:

identifying at least one additional packet within an additional group of packets, wherein said additional group of packets is related to another group of packets traveling through said connection;

providing a first timestamp associated with said additional packet;

retrieving a first sequence number associated with said additional packet;

determining a length of said additional packet group;

adding said determined length to said retrieved sequence number associated with said additional packet to identify another packet;

providing a second timestamp associated with when said another packet travels past said packet-identification point, said another packet sent incident to a valid communication of said additional packet; and

calculating a difference between said second timestamp and said first timestamp associated with said additional packet to compute said RTT.

The media of claim 5 , wherein updating said RTT includes discarding one or more RTT computations associated with one or more of said additional packets if said one or more of said additional packets is a retransmitted packet whereby said retransmitted packet's RTT value will not be included in updating said RTT.

The media of claim 5 , wherein updating said RTT includes discarding one or more RTT computations associated with one or more of said additional packets if said one or more of said additional packets is a duplicate-acknowledgment packet whereby said duplicate-acknowledgment's RTT value will not be included in updating said RTT.

The media of claim 5 , wherein updating said RTT includes discarding one or more RTT computations associated with one or more of said additional packets if said one or more of said additional packets is a three-times-received duplicate-acknowledgment packet whereby said three-times-received duplicate-acknowledgment's RTT value will not be included in updating said RTT.
