Abstract

The present invention relates to the implantation of one or more prosthetic valve(s) in the pulmonary vein(s) of a subject as a means of decreasing or preventing an increase in pulmonary venous pressure. The present invention accordingly provides for novel treatment strategies for the treatment of medical disorders associated with elevated pulmonary venous pressure, including congestive heart failure, as well as for prosthetic pulmonary vein valves and their delivery systems. Expandable as well as fixed-dimension non-expandable pulmonary vein prosthetic valves for implantation by a variety of surgical and percutaneous procedures are also described.

Claims (10)

1. A pulmonary vein prosthetic valve device for implantation in a subject, the valve device comprising:

a diaphragm type portion;

an anchoring portion; and

one or more bridging arms flexibly attaching the diaphragm type portion to the anchoring portion, wherein the one or more bridging arms permit movement of the diaphragm type portion in a direction substantially perpendicular to a plane defined by the anchoring portion such that said diaphragm type portion remains in a planar position substantially parallel to the plane defined by the anchoring portion and facilitates displacement of the diaphragm type portion of the device into an open or closed position in response to blood flow pressure.

2. The valve device of claim 1 , wherein the anchoring portion is configured to attach the valve device to the atrial wall.

3. The valve device of claim 2 , wherein the anchoring portion is configured to attach the valve device to the atria wall by sutures, staples, or glue.

4. The valve device of claim 1 , wherein the anchoring portion comprises a stent.

5. The valve device of claim 4 , wherein the stent is configured to be positioned substantially within the pulmonary vein.

6. The valve device of claim 4 , wherein the valve device is mounted on a delivery catheter.

7. The valve device of claim 1 further including one or more fenestrations provided between the one or more bridging arms to permit blood flow therethrough in the open position.
