Abstract

Method and system are disclosed for automated testing of a patient's hearing. The automated hearing test allows the patient to quickly and accurately test his own hearing with minimal or no assistance from an audiologist or other hearing health professionals. The test prompts and instructs the patient for inputs and responses as needed. The patient can select one or several tests to be performed, including air and bone conduction testing with masking, speech reception threshold, speech discrimination, tympanogram, acoustic reflex, and otoacoustic emissions testing. Multiple languages are supported. Data obtained from one test may be used for another test or another iteration of the same test to calculate masking levels. The automatic hearing test also detects ambient noise and can compensate for it in the test results. If a contingency occurs, the automated hearing test is configured to page the operator for assistance.

Claims (40)

1. A method of managing a patient in a computer-based, multimedia system for allowing the patient to quickly and conveniently test his hearing without a sound isolation chamber and with minimal assistance from an operator, the method comprising:

receiving an indication of a problem from the computer-based, multimedia system;

determining whether the problem is a patient warning event;

issuing a warning message to the patient if the problem is a patient warning event;

obtaining an acknowledgment of the warning message from the patient;

determining whether the problem is an operator alerting event; and

alerting the operator if the problem is an operator alerting event.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising alerting the operator if the patient warning message has been issued a predetermined number of times.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of determining whether the problem is a patient warning event includes referencing a patient warning event table.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of determining whether the problem is an operator alerting event includes referencing an operator alerting event table.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the warning message is a text message that describes the problem.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of alerting the operator includes wireless paging of the operator.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of alerting the operator includes sending a wireless text message to the operator.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising compiling the number and types of patient warning events and operator alerting events and adjusting the hearing test based on a result thereof.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the problem is an operator alerting event if the indication signifies that there is an equipment problem.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the problem is a patient warning event, further comprising alerting either the operator in addition to issuing a warning message to the patient.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the problem is a patient warning event, further comprising alerting the operator instead of issuing a warning message to the patient.

12. A system for allowing a patient to quickly, conveniently, and thoroughly test his own speech discrimination threshold without a sound isolation chamber and with minimal assistance from an operator, comprising:

transducers, including an air conduction transducer and a bone conduction transducer;

a hearing test device capable of producing tones, speech, and masking noise connected to the transducers; and

a computer connected to the hearing test device and storing an automated hearing test thereon, the automated hearing test configured to cause the computer to:

detect a problem with the patient;

determine whether the problem is a patient warning event;

issue a warning message to the patient if the problem is a patient warning event;

obtain an acknowledgment of the warning message from the patient;

determine whether the problem is an operator alerting event; and

alert the operator if the problem is an operator alerting event.

13. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the automated hearing test further causes the computer to alert the operator if the patient warning message has been issued a predetermined number of times.

14. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the automated hearing test causes the computer to determine whether the problem is a patient warning event by referencing a patient warning event table.

15. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the automated hearing test causes the computer to determine whether the problem is an operator alerting event by referencing an operator alerting event table.

16. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the warning message that the automated hearing test causes the computer to issue is a text message that describes the problem.

17. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the automated hearing test causes the computer to alert the operator by wireless paging of the operator.

18. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the automated hearing test causes the computer to alert the operator by sending a wireless text message to the operator.

19. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the automated hearing test further causes the computer to compile the number and types of patient warning events and operator alerting events and adjust the hearing test based on a result thereof.

20. A method of managing a patient in a computer-based, multimedia system for allowing the patient to quickly and conveniently test his hearing without a sound isolation chamber and with minimal assistance from an operator, the method comprising:

receiving notification of a predefined event from the computer-based, multimedia system in connection with a hearing related test, the hearing related test determining one or more hearing thresholds of the patient; and

alerting the operator upon reception of the notification, wherein the predefined event includes:

an indication that the hearing related test is completed,

an indication that an entire hearing test session is completed, and

an indication that the patient has failed to respond for a predetermined inactivity period.
