Bone fixation system
View Patent ↗Disclosed is a bone fixation device of the type useful for connecting soft tissue or tendon to bone or for connecting two or more bones or bone fragments together. The device comprises an elongate body having a distal anchor thereon. A proximal anchor is axially movably disposed with respect to the distal anchor, to accommodate different bone dimensions and permit appropriate tensioning of the fixation device. In one embodiment, the fixation device is optimized for construction from a biocompatible metal such as titanium, and the proximal anchor is removable to permit removal of the fixation device.
1. A method of fixing a first piece of bone to a second piece of bone, comprising the steps of:
providing a pin having a distal anchor with a plurality of axially extending lever arms and proximal end with a rotational structure;
providing a proximal anchor that is axially moveable on the pin, the proximal anchor having a gripping structure;
providing a deployment tool comprising a first component and a second component;
advancing the distal anchor in a compressed configuration through the first piece of bone and into the second piece of bone;
locking the plurality of axially extending lever arms in an expanded position;
advancing the proximal anchor distally along the pin to secure the first piece of bone to the second piece of bone; and
engaging the first component with the rotational structure of the pin;
engaging the second component with the gripping structure of the proximal anchor
rotating the second component with respect to the first component.
2. A method of fixing a first piece of bone to a second piece of bone as in claim 1 , wherein the advancing the distal anchor step comprises advancing the distal anchor all the way through the second piece of bone.
3. A method of fixing a first piece of bone to a second piece of bone as in claim 1 , wherein the first and second component are concentric with each other.
