Abstract

An apparatus such as a vehicle having a generator. The apparatus includes a rotational shaft having a longitudinal axis, a stator having a core and windings disposed on the core, and a rotor coupled to the shaft. The core includes first and second surfaces at least partially surrounding the longitudinal axis. A portion of the first inner surface is disposed a first radial distance from the longitudinal axis, and a portion of the second inner surface is disposed a second radial distance from the longitudinal axis. The second radial distance is greater than the first radial distance.

Claims (12)

1. An apparatus comprising:

an engine including

a shaft having a longitudinal axis, and

a housing having a structure;

a stator including a core and conductors disposed on the core, the core comprising

a first plurality of laminations defining a first inner surface surrounding the longitudinal axis and comprising a first lamination, the first inner surface being disposed a first radius from the longitudinal axis in a radial plane, the first lamination having a first surface transverse to the axis, the first surface having a first width in the radial plane,

a second plurality of laminations disposed adjacent to the first plurality of laminations, the second plurality of laminations defining a second inner surface surrounding the longitudinal axis and comprising a second lamination disposed adjacent to the first lamination, the second inner surface being disposed a second radius from the longitudinal axis in the radial plane, the second radius being greater than the first radius, the second lamination having a second surface partially disposed adjacent to the first surface and transverse to the axis, the second surface having a second width in the radial plane, the second width being less than the first width;

a rotor coupled to the shaft, at least a portion of the rotor surrounding at least a portion of the core;

wherein the first lamination includes a shelf defined by the portion of the first surface not being disposed adjacent to the second surface in the radial plane, and wherein the shelf and a portion of the second inner surface define a recess; and

wherein the structure of the housing extends into the recess.

2. An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the core defines an aperture in the radial plane, and wherein the aperture is disposed in only the first lamination of the first lamination and the second lamination.

3. An apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the aperture receives a fastener that interconnects the stator with the housing.
