Abstract

An enhanced reel strip includes a base reel strip and an overlay strip, wherein the base reel strip has symbols applied thereto and the overlay strip has designated portions thereof removed to create cut-outs. The base reel strip and overlay strip are affixed in such a manner that the symbols of the base reel strip are visible through the cut-outs of the overlay strip. The joined strips produce an enhanced reel strip. Furthermore, these enhanced reel strip production methods dramatically improve the quality and appearance of reel strips while utilizing a relatively simple manufacturing process that maintains cost effectiveness.

Claims (16)

1. An enhanced reel strip for use with a slot reel, the enhanced reel strip comprising:

a base reel strip that is flexible, substantially translucent or transparent and having one or more symbols applied onto a surface of the base reel strip; and

an opaque overlay strip affixed to the base reel strip, wherein the overlay strip includes one or more cut-outs positioned over the one or more symbols on the base reel strip whereby the combination of the opaque overlay strip and the base reel strip enhance the clarity of the one or more symbols.

2. The enhanced reel strip of claim 1 , wherein the overlay strip is colored, patterned, or textured.

3. The enhanced reel strip of claim 1 , wherein each cut-out are shaped and sized to create an open border around each symbol of the base reel strip.

4. The enhanced reel strip of claim 3 , further comprising a backlighting system that facilitates light passing through the cut-outs in the overlay material and illuminating the open border areas around the symbols on the enhanced reel strip.

5. The enhanced reel strip of claim 1 , wherein each cut-out has a shape that does not correspond to the shape of each symbol of the base reel strip.

6. The enhanced reel strip of claim 1 , further comprising a backlighting system that facilitates light passing through the cut-outs in the overlay material and illuminating the open border areas around the symbols on the enhanced reel strip.

7. The enhanced reel strip of claim 1 , wherein the overlay strip includes metalized foil, holographic material, prismatic material, phosphorescent material, fluorescent material, mirrored material, or glitter.

8. A gaming machine, comprising:

a plurality of reels, wherein each reel comprises a base reel strip and an overlay strip affixed to the base reel strip, wherein the base strip is flexible, substantially translucent or transparent and having one or more symbols applied onto a surface of the base reel strip, and wherein the overlay strip includes one or more cut-outs that correspond to the one or more symbols on the base reel strip, and wherein the overlay strip is colored, patterned, or textured; and

lighting associated with the plurality of reels to emphasize the symbols on the base reel strip.

9. The gaming machine of claim 8 , wherein the lighting is backlighting, front lighting, or ambient lighting.

10. The gaming machine of claim 8 , wherein each cut-out are shaped and sized to create an open border around each symbol of the base reel strip.

11. The gaming machine of claim 8 , wherein each cut-out has a shape that does not correspond to the shape of each symbol of the base reel strip.

12. The gaming machine of claim 8 , wherein the overlay strip includes metalized foil, holographic material, prismatic material, phosphorescent material, fluorescent material, mirrored material, or glitter.
