Abstract

Laminoplasty plates are engageable to at least one portion of a divided lamina to maintain a desired spacing relative to the spinal canal. The laminoplasty plates include a spacer portion having a first end and a second end that spans a gap formed by at least one of a divided lamina portion. The laminoplasty plates can include a lamina engagement portion at one end for engagement with the divided lamina portion.

Claims (20)

1. A plating system for a laminoplasty procedure, comprising:

a spacer portion extending along a first axis from a first end to a second end, wherein said spacer portion is sized between said first and second ends for positioning between first and second portions of a divided lamina of a single vertebra with said first end adjacent the first portion of the divided lamina and with said second end adjacent the second portion of the divided lamina;

a first lamina stabilizing flange adjacent said first end, wherein said first lamina stabilizing flange extends away from said first axis at a first angle in relation to said first axis, wherein said first lamina stabilizing flange extends straight along said first angle in relation to said spacer portion, wherein a first end portion of said first lamina stabilizing flange includes one or more openings configured to receive one or more securement mechanisms;

a second lamina stabilizing flange adjacent said first end, wherein said second lamina stabilizing flange includes a connecting portion extending away from said first end toward said second end in a first direction in relation to said first axis, wherein said second lamina stabilizing flange includes an end portion extending away from said connecting portion toward said first end in a second direction in relation to said first axis; and

a third lamina stabilizing flange adjacent said second end.

2. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said spacer portion is generally rectangular in shape.

3. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said third lamina stabilizing flange includes a plurality of securement openings.

4. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said third lamina stabilizing flange extends away from said spacer portion at a second angle relative to said first axis.

5. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said first angle ranges from approximately 5 to 85 degrees.

6. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said first angle ranges from approximately 15 to 75 degrees.

7. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said first angle ranges from approximately 30 to 60 degrees.

8. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said first angle ranges from approximately 40 to 50 degrees.

9. The plating system of claim 1 , wherein said first direction forms a second angle with said first axis that orients said connecting portion away from said first lamina stabilizing flange and said second direction forms a third angle with said first axis that orients said end portion toward said first lamina stabilizing flange.

10. The plating system of claim 9 , wherein said end portion and said first stabilizing flange define an angle of less than about 15 degrees therebetween.

11. The plating system of claim 10 , wherein said connecting portion and said end portion have a generally rectangular shaped configuration.

12. A plating system for a laminoplasty procedure, comprising:

a spacer portion extending along a first axis between a first end and a second end;

a first lamina stabilizing flange defined by a bend at said first end, wherein said bend forms an obtuse angle between a lower surface of said spacer portion and said first lamina stabilizing flange, wherein after said bend said first lamina stabilizing flange extends generally straight along said obtuse angle, wherein a first end portion of said first lamina stabilizing flange includes at least one opening adapted to receive a securement mechanism;

a second lamina stabilizing flange proximate said first end and spaced apart from said first lamina stabilizing flange, wherein said second lamina stabilizing flange includes a connecting portion that extends downwardly in relation to said lower surface forming an acute angle between said lower surface and said second end of said spacer portion, wherein said second lamina stabilizing flange further includes an end portion adjacent said connecting portion that extends back in the general direction of said first lamina stabilizing flange forming a second obtuse angle between said lower surface of said spacer portion and said second end; and

a third lamina stabilizing flange adjacent said second end.
