Abstract

A lens and cartridge packaging system and method of use which simplify the removal and transfer of an IOL to an IOL insertion device is disclosed. The packaging system enables a user to easily load an IOL into a cartridge without the use of forceps. In addition, the packaging system also allows a user to fold and insert the IOL into a cartridge without damaging the IOL and/or compromising IOL sterility. In addition, the related methods of use minimize and/or eliminate damage to the IOL during unpackaging, folding, transfer and loading procedures.

Claims (22)

1. A device for holding an intraocular lens, comprised of:

a lens cartridge comprised of a plurality of wings, a load chamber, and an insertion tube connected to the load chamber, the load chamber having an open position for receiving an intraocular lens;

a push-rod comprised of a handle in communication with a slide, wherein the handle includes a top surface and a sidewall that extends around the perimeter of the top surface and wherein the slide includes a generally planar body;

a tray comprised of a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one indentation or aperture, wherein the intraocular lens is capable of being housed within a first portion of the at least one indentation or aperture and wherein the lens cartridge is capable of being housed within a second portion of the at least one indentation or aperture in the open position; wherein the proximal end of the tray is comprised of a wall with an opening configured and dimensioned to receive the push-rod; wherein while the push-rod is in communication with the opening, and while the intraocular lens and lens cartridge are housed within the first and second portions of the at least one indentation or aperture, respectively, the push-rod causes controlled movement of the intraocular lens from the at least one indentation or aperture and onto the lens cartridge.

2. The device of claim 1 further comprising a lid configured to cover at least a portion of a top surface and a sidewall of the tray.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the second portion of the at least one indentation or aperture is comprised of an elongate slot configured and dimensioned to couple with a portion of the lens cartridge.

4. The device of claim 1 further comprising a lock secured to the tray that locks the device during shipping and storage.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the at least one indentation or aperture is comprised of a transverse slot configured to receive the plurality of wings when the cartridge is disposed in the open position.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the wings are configured to maintain the cartridge in the open position when a sufficient force is applied to the wings.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the wall extends downward around the perimeter of a top surface of the tray and forms a hollow cavity beneath the top surface.

8. A device for holding an intraocular lens, comprised of:

a lens cartridge comprised of a plurality of wings, a load chamber for receiving an intraocular lens when the lens cartridge is in an open position, and an insertion tube connected to the load chamber, the lens cartridge configured so that the intraocular lens is transferable from the load chamber through the insertion tube and into an eye;

a push-rod comprised of a handle in communication with a slide, wherein the handle includes a top surface and a sidewall that extends around the perimeter of the top surface and wherein the slide includes a generally planar body; and

a tray comprised of a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one indentation or aperture, wherein the intraocular lens is capable of being housed within a first portion of the at least one indentation or aperture and wherein the lens cartridge is capable of being housed within a second portion of the at least one indentation or aperture in the open position, wherein the proximal end of the tray is comprised of a wall with an opening configured and dimensioned to receive the push-rod; wherein while the push-rod is in communication with the opening, and while the intraocular lens and lens cartridge are housed within the first and second portions of the at least one indentation or aperture, respectively, the push-rod causes controlled movement of the intraocular lens from the at least one indentation or aperture and onto the lens cartridge.

9. The device of claim 8 further comprising a lid configured to cover at least a portion of a top surface and a sidewall of the tray.

10. The device of claim 8 further comprising wherein the second portion of the at least one indentation or aperture is comprised of an elongate slot configured to receive a portion of the lens cartridge.

11. The device of claim 8 further comprising a lock secured to the tray.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the lock is removable from the tray.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the lock is configured to prevent movement of the intraocular lens, cartridge and push-rod until the lock is removed from the tray.

14. The device of claim 8 , wherein the second portion of the at least one indentation or aperture is comprised of a transverse slot configured to receive the plurality of wings when the cartridge is disposed in the open position.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the wings are configured to maintain the cartridge in the open position when a sufficient force is applied to the wings.

16. The device of claim 8 , wherein the wall extends downward around the perimeter of a top surface of the tray and forms a hollow cavity beneath the top surface.
