Abstract

A device for delivering a drug includes a body having a proximal end and a distal end and an opening in the distal end thereof. An orifice mechanism at the distal end of the body communicates with the opening. The orifice mechanism includes an inner member having a proximal end and a distal end; a winding helically wound around the inner member; and wherein the winding and the inner member define a first channel for carrying a drug therethrough. An inlet is at the proximal end of the winding and an outlet is at the distal end of the inner member.

Claims (33)

1. A device for delivering a drug comprising:

a body having a proximal end and a distal end and an opening in the distal end thereof;

an orifice mechanism at the distal end of the body and communicating with the opening, the orifice mechanism comprising:

(i) an inner member having a proximal end and a distal end;

(ii) a winding helically wound around the inner member, the winding comprising a wire, wherein the wire has a width ranging from 0.001–0.050 inches; and

(iii) the winding and the inner member defining a first channel having a helical flow path following the curvature of the winding for carrying a drug therethrough and an inlet at the proximal end of the winding and an outlet at the distal end of the winding, the drug being carried along the helical flow path and being dispensed from the device at the outlet at the distal end of the winding and the opening in the distal end of the body.

2. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a handle at the proximal end of the body.

3. The device according to claim 2 , further comprising a control on the handle and operatively connected to the distal end of the body for moving the distal end of the body.

4. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a drug in the body and communicating with the inlet of the winding.

5. The device according to claim 4 , further comprising the drug communicating with the first channel.

6. The device according to claim 5 , wherein the body and the winding define a second channel for carrying the drug therethrough.

7. The device according to claim 6 , further comprising the drug communicating with the second channel.

8. The device according to claim 5 , further comprising the drug communicating with the outlet and the opening.

9. The device according to claim 7 , further comprising the drug communicating with the outlet and the opening.

10. The device according to claim 3 , wherein the device is a catheter.

11. The device according to claim 3 , wherein the device is an intravenous drug delivery device.

12. The device according to claim 6 , wherein the body includes channel filling material for blocking flow of the drug through the second channel.

13. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the wire has a circular shape in cross-section.

14. The device according to claim 6 , wherein the wire has a circular shape in cross-section.

15. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the wire has a hexagonal shape in cross-section.

16. The device according to claim 6 , wherein the wire has a hexagonal shape in cross-section.

17. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the wire has an octagonal shape in cross-section.

18. The device according to claim 6 , wherein the wire has an octagonal shape in cross-section.

19. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the wire has a triangular shape in cross-section.

20. The device according to claim 6 , wherein the body comprises a sleeve.

21. The device according to claim 6 , wherein the body is made of a polymer material.

22. The device according to claim 21 , wherein the polymer material is PTFE.

23. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the channel filling material is a glue.

24. The orifice device according to claim 1 , wherein the wire is made of a degradation-resistant material.

25. The device according to claim 24 , wherein the material is a nickel titanium alloy.

26. The device according to claim 24 , wherein the material is a stainless steel alloy.

27. The device according to claim 24 , wherein the material is plastic.

28. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the wire has a width ranging from 0.004–0.005 inches.
