Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for temporarily excluding an aneurysm or an arterio-venous fistula from a flow path by transluminally disposing a hollow balloon catheter structure within the aneurysm so that its proximal and distal ends extend past the aneurysm while maintaining continuity of the flow path, and then injecting a synthetic molding material or a biological hardening agent into the aneurysm cavity to cause solidification of the volume within the cavity. Once the material within the excluded aneurysm has solidified, the balloon catheter structure is deflated and removed, so that the hardened mass forms a new lining for the organ or vessel, and relieves the weakened tissue of the aneurysm or fistula from further flow-induced stress.

Claims (23)

1. A device for treating an aneurysm or arterio-venous fistula in a body lumen, comprising: a tubular member comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a passage extending therebetween, the tubular member being expandable from a collapsed state to an expanded state; expandable first and second cuffs on the proximal and distal end of the tubular member, respectively; means for actuating the expansion of the first and second expandable cuffs and the tubular member; and, wherein the tubular member comprises a sheet, the sheet being rolled such that an overlapping edge of the sheet spirals along an outer surface of the sheet in the collapsed state.

A device for treating an aneurysm or arterio-venous fistula in a body lumen, comprising: a tubular member comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a passage extending therebetween, the tubular member being expandable from a collapsed state to an expanded state; expandable first and second cuffs on the proximal and distal end of the tubular member, respectively; means for actuating the expansion of the first and second expandable cuffs and the tubular member; and, further comprising a delivery catheter, the tubular member being wound against the delivery catheter in the collapsed state wherein the passage has a first diameter, and the tubular member configured to unwind from the delivery catheter to assume the expanded state wherein the passage has a second diameter larger than the first diameter.

A device for treating an aneurysm or arterio-venous fistula in a body lumen, comprising: a tubular member comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a passage extending therebetween, the tubular member being expandable from a collapsed state to an expanded state; expandable first and second cuffs on the proximal and distal end of the tubular member, respectively; means for actuating the expansion of the first and second expandable cuffs and the tubular member; a lumen extending long a length of the tubular member, the lumen being isolated from the passage and configured for injecting a fluid from within the lumen to a region beyond and outer surface of the tubular member; and, wherein the lumen comprises a balloon wound around the outer surface of the tubular member.

4. A device for treating an aneurysm or arterio-venous fistula in a body lumen, comprising:

a tubular member wound against the delivery catheter wherein the tubular member is comprised of a proximal end, a distal end, an intermediate region and a passage extending between the proximal and distal ends, the tubular member being expandable from a collapsed state to an expanded state; and

a helical member wound along a portion of an outer wall of the tubular member and collapsed against the intermediate region of the tubular member, wherein the helical member closely engages the intermediate region exterior of the tubular member in the collapsed state and is removable from the expanded state and comprising a plurality of openings communicating with a lumen within the helical member.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the tubular member further comprises an outer wall, an inner wall, and an annular space between the outer and inner walls.

6. The device of claim 4 , wherein the tubular member has a uniform outer diameter in the expanded state.

7. The device of claim 4 , wherein the proximal and distal ends of the tubular member have a first diameter in the expanded state, and an intermediate region of the tubular member has a second diameter in the expanded state that is less than the first diameter.

8. The device of claim 4 , further comprising:

a first cuff on the proximal end of the tubular member;

a second cuff on the distal end of the tubular member; and

a pressurizing lumen in communication with the first and second cuffs, the pressurizing lumen suitable for delivering a fluid into the first and second cuff for transitioning the first and second cuffs between a collapsed state and an expanded state, the expanded state being larger than the tubular member in its expanded state.

9. The device of claim 4 , further comprising a delivery lumen in communication with the lumen of the helical member, wherein a hardening agent is injectable into the delivery lumen, out of the plurality of openings, and into a region beyond an outer wall of the tubular member.

10. The device of claim 4 , wherein the helical member further comprises an inflation lumen, the device further comprising:

a first mechanism coupled to the proximal end of the tubular member; and

a second mechanism coupled to the distal end of the tubular member;

wherein the first and second mechanisms are in communication with the inflation lumen.

11. The device of claim 4 , wherein the tubular member further comprises an outer wall, an inner wall, and an annular space between the outer and inner walls, the device further comprising:

a pressurizing lumen in communication with the annular space;

a first cuff on the proximal end of the tubular member; and

a second cuff on the distal end of the tubular member;

wherein the first and second cuffs are in communication with the annular space of the tubular member.
