Abstract

An electrosurgical instrument includes a housing having a shaft attached thereto which connects a pair of first and second jaw members in an opposing manner relative to one another. The jaw members are movable relative to one another from a first open position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second closed position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. The instrument also includes a handle which imparts movement of the first and second jaw members from the first and second positions and a rotating assembly for rotating the jaw members about a longitudinal axis defined through the shaft. A pair of electrical leads connect the jaw members to a source of electrical energy such that the jaw members are capable of conducting energy through tissue held therebetween. The leads include a slack-like loop disposed in the rotating assembly which permits rotation of the jaw members about the longitudinal axis without unduly straining the electrical leads.

Claims (24)

1. An electrosurgical instrument, comprising:

a housing having a shaft attached thereto, the shaft defining a longitudinal axis;

a first jaw member movable relative to a second jaw member, the first jaw member attached to the shaft and being relatively movable from a first open position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second closed position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;

a handle attached to the housing which imparts movement of the first jaw member from the first and second positions;

a rotating assembly attached to the housing which rotates the jaw members about the longitudinal axis;

first and second electrical leads which connect the jaw members to a source of electrical energy such that the jaw members are capable of conducting energy through tissue held therebetween; and

at least one of the first and second electrical leads including a slack loop disposed in the rotating assembly which permits rotation of the jaw members about the longitudinal axis.

2. An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 1 wherein the first and second jaw members are movable in a pivotable fashion relative to one another and the jaw members are rotatable substantially 360 degrees about the longitudinal axis.

3. An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 1 wherein the first electrical lead connects the first jaw member to a first electrical potential and the second electrical lead connects the second jaw member to a second electrical potential.

4. An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 1 wherein the first and second electrical leads are disposed within at least one channel defined in the outer periphery of the shaft.

5. An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 1 wherein the first electrical lead is disposed within a channel defined in the outer periphery of the shaft, the channel being oriented and dimensioned to facilitate introduction of the first electrical lead into the first jaw member.

An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 5 wherein the first jaw member includes at least one cable guide which directs the first electrical lead from the first channel through the first jaw member to an electrically conductive sealing plate disposed on an inner facing surface of the first jaw member.

An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 6 wherein the first jaw member includes an insulative substrate disposed between the electrically conductive sealing plate and an outer housing of the jaw member, the insulative substrate including an aperture defined therethrough which permits passage of the first electrical lead from the first channel to the electrically conductive sealing plate.

8. An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 1 wherein the rotating assembly includes at least one mechanical interface which cooperates with a corresponding mechanical interface disposed on the housing to prevent overrotation of the jaw members.

9. An electrosurgical instrument according to claim 8 wherein the jaw members are rotatable about 180 degrees about the axis in at least one of the clockwise and the counter-clockwise direction.

10. An electrosurgical instrument for performing at least one of sealing and dividing tissue, comprising:

a housing having a shaft attached thereto, the shaft defining a longitudinal axis;

first and second jaw members pivotally attached to the shaft in opposing relation relative to one another, the jaw members being relatively movable from a first open position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second closed position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;

a drive rod assembly operatively associated with the housing which imparts movement of the jaw members between the first and second positions;

a handle attached to the housing which actuates the drive rod assembly;

a rotating assembly attached to the housing which rotates the jaw members about the longitudinal axis;

a knife assembly attached to the housing for separating tissue;

first and second electrical leads which connect the jaw members to a source of electrical energy such that the jaw members are capable of conducting energy through tissue held therebetween; and

at least one of the first and second electrical leads including a slack loop disposed in the rotating assembly which permits rotation of the jaw members about the longitudinal axis.
