Abstract

A method is provided for sealing a container into which optical fibers are fed. A portion of the optical fibers is accommodated between two strips which are sealed together by applying heat and/or pressure. The strips are then placed in an opening of the container and the container is sealed. The strips, which may be made of plastic, support the fibers while providing an excellent seal.

Claims (16)

1. Method of sealingly enclosing a space into which at least one optical fibre and/or cable is fed, the method comprising the steps of:

a) providing a container having an opening,

b) providing two sealing strips separate from the container,

c) accommodating a portion of at least one optical fibre and/or cable between the two sealing strips while the sealing strips are still separate from the container, and subsequently

d) applying heat and/or pressure to the strips with the at least one optical fibre and/or cable accommodated therein so as to produce a sealing member which sealingly encloses the at least one fibre and/or cable,

e) placing the sealing member with the at least one fibre and/or cable accommodated therein in said opening, and

f) applying heat and/or pressure to the container so as to seal said opening onto the sealing member.

2. Method according to claim 1 , wherein placing the sealing member in said opening is carried out before applying heat and/or pressure to the strips so as to produce a sealing member which sealingly encloses the at least one fibre, and wherein applying heat and/or pressure to the strips so as to produce a sealing member which sealingly encloses the at least one fibre and applying heat and/or pressure to the container so as to seal said opening onto the strips are carried out substantially simultaneously.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the container is substantially rigid.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the container is substantially flexible.

5. A method according to claim 4 , wherein the container comprises a bag made of laminate comprising aluminum.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the sealing strips are made of plastic.

7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the sealing strips are provided with a layer of hot-melt adhesive.

8. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the strips have an effective width of at least 1 cm.

9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein accommodating a portion of the at least one optical fibre and/or cable comprises accommodating the portion with the at least one optical fibre and/or cable extending substantially transversely to the longitudinal direction of the strips.

10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein accommodating a portion of the at least one optical fibre and/or cable comprises accommodating a portion of a plurality of optical fibres and/or cables between the two sealing strips.
