Abstract

An endodontic reamer ( 10 ) and a method for manufacturing endodontic reamers ( 10 ) and files, more specifically an endodontic reamer ( 10 ) having a cylindrical shaft ( 12 ) and a working portion ( 16 ) extending forward from a removed end of the shaft. The working portion ( 16 ) includes, typically, a pair of wedged shaped projecting sections ( 18 ) that extend beyond the diameter of the shaft ( 12 ). Forward from the wedge shaped sections ( 18 ) is a nose, typically noncutting nose ( 24 a ), that has a diameter of about equal to the diameter of the shaft ( 12 ). There are typically two wedge-shaped sections projecting outward opposite one another. A novel method is provided for manufacturing an endodontic reamer ( 10 ), which consists of using a two-piece mold and a wire blank between the mold, followed by forcing the mod together, under compression, against the wire blank, to deform the blank into the shape of mold parts.

Claims (31)

1. A dental instrument comprising:

a flexible shaft having a surface, a longitudinal axis, a near end and a removed end;

a working portion extending beyond said removed end of said shaft and including a longitudinal axis coincident with said longitudinal axis of said shaft; said working portion comprising a wedge having a forward portion distal from said shaft and a trailing portion proximal to said shaft, said forward portion and said trailing portion connected at an apex; said apex extending perpendicularly from said working portion longitudinal axis beyond said surface of said removed end of said shaft; said wedge being non-helical about said working portion longitudinal axis; and said wedge forward portion having a non-helical cutting portion.

2. The dental instrument of claim 1 wherein:

said wedge forward portion has a leading edge portion that extends forward of said apex and makes an angle of less than 90° with said working portion longitudinal axis;

said cutting portion being integral with said leading edge portion; and said leading edge portion being generally rectangular shaped.

3. The dental instrument of claim 1 wherein said wedge is at least partially convex in cross-section perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.

4. The dental instrument of claim 1 wherein said wedge is from 0.009 mm to 2.99 mm thick.

5. The dental instrument of claim 1 comprised of one of the following: nitinol, stainless steel, carbide steel, or other steel, plastic, composite, or graphite.

6. The dental instrument of claim 1 wherein said shaft has a diameter of between 0.01 mm and 3.00 mm and length of between 1.0 mm and 100.0 mm.

7. The dental instrument of claim 1 further comprising;

a shank, said shank extending beyond said near end of said shaft; said shank having an outer surface, said outer surface having a groove or a notch, said groove or notch having a reduced diameter compared to said outer surface adjacent thereto.

8. The dental instrument of claim 1 , wherein said cutting portion is from 0.05 mm to 0.25 mm wide.

9. The dental instrument of claim 1 wherein said working portion further comprises a nose extending beyond said wedge forward portion.

10. The dental instrument of claim 9 , wherein said nose is generally cylindrical about said longitudinal axis and is non cutting.

11. The dental instrument of claim 9 , wherein said nose is generally hemicylindrical about said longitudinal axis and has cutting edges.

12. The dental instrument of claim 9 comprised of one of the following: nitinol, stainless steel, carbide steel, or other steel plastic, composite, or graphite.

13. The dental instrument of claim 1 wherein said working portion includes a pair of diametrically opposed wedges.

14. The dental instrument of claim 13 wherein:

said wedges each have a forward portion having a leading edge portion that extends forward of said apex and makes an angle of less than 90° with said working portion longitudinal axis; said cutting portions being integral with said leading edge portions; and said leading edge portions being generally rectangular shaped.

15. The dental instrument of claim 13 wherein said wedges are at least partially convex in cross-section perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.

16. The dental instrument of claim 13 wherein said wedges are from 0.009 mm to 2.99 mm thick.

17. The dental instrument of claim 13 comprised of one of the following: nitinol, stainless steel, carbide steel, or other steel plastic, composite, or graphite.

18. The dental instrument of claim 13 wherein said shaft has a diameter of between 0.01 mm and 3.00 mm and length of between 1.0 mm and 100.0 mm.

19. The dental instrument of claim 1 wherein said working portion comprises at least two wedges.

20. The dental instrument of claim 19 comprising a nose forward of said at least two wedges.

21. The dental instrument of claim 20 wherein said nose is generally cylindrical about said longitudinal axis and is non cutting.

22. The dental instrument of claim 20 , wherein said nose comprises cutting edges.

23. The dental instrument of claim 19 wherein said wedges are oblique to the longitudinal axis of the working portion.

24. The dental instrument of claim 19 wherein said forward portion of each of said at least two wedges has a leading edge portion that extends forward of said apex and makes an angle of less than 90° with said working portion longitudinal axis.

25. The dental instrument of claim 24 wherein said cutting portion being integral with said leading edge portion and said leading edge portion being generally rectangular shaped.
