Abstract

A system and method for wireless network communications with a portable communication instrument. The portable communication instrument can be a personal mobile phone. The communications can include voice, video or text information. The information is transmitted from a transmitter in the wireless network to the portable communication instrument over a wireless link. The personal communication instrument is additionally coupled to a stationary unit having display characteristics other than those of the personal communication instrument. At least a portion of the information received at the portable communication instrument is retransmitted to the stationary unit for output, for example, on an improved or larger display.

Claims (26)

1 - 10 . (canceled)

11 . A method for communication in a wireless communication network, comprising:

receiving digitized communication information at a portable communication instrument from a first stationary communication means over a first wireless link; and

retransmitting at least a portion of the received digitized communication information to a second stationary communication means over a second wireless link for display on the second stationary communication means.

12 . A method for communication in a wireless communication network, comprising:

connecting a portable communication instrument to a first stationary communication means via a first wireless communication channel having a first information bandwidth so that the portable communication instrument receives digitized communication information from the first stationary communication means;

further, connecting the portable communication instrument to a second stationary communication means via a second wireless communication channel having a second information bandwidth, wherein the second information bandwidth is not less than about the first information bandwidth; and

retransmitting at least a portion of the digitized communication information received by the portable communication instrument to the second stationary communication means.

13 . The method of claim 12 wherein the digitized communication information received by the portable communication instrument comprises audio and video information, and wherein at least a portion of the audio and video information is retransmitted to the second stationary communication means, further comprising displaying the retransmitted information at the second stationary communication means.

14 . The method of claim 12 further comprising providing the second communication channel as a part of a second communication network.

15 . The method of claim 12 wherein the second information bandwidth is greater than the first information bandwidth, further comprising reformatting the digitized communication information received at the portable communication means to a transmission format of the second communication channel.

16 . The method of claim 12 wherein connecting the portable communication instrument to a second stationary communication means via a second wireless communication channel having a second information bandwidth, comprises providing an automatic connection when the portable communication instrument is in a range of the second stationary communication means.

17 . A wireless communication system comprising:

a first stationary communication means comprising a first transmitting and receiving unit, wherein the first stationary communication means is part of a first wireless network;

a second stationary communication means comprising:

a fourth receiving unit; and,

a second information output unit; and

a portable communication unit comprising:

a second transmitting and receiving unit for communication with the first transmitting and receiving unit;

a first information output; and

a third transmitting unit for communicating with the fourth receiving unit.

18 . The system of claim 17 wherein the portable communication instrument further comprises an interface between the second transmitting and receiving unit and the third transmitting unit.

19 . The system of claim 17 wherein the portable communication instrument comprises a first W-LAN interface for communication with a second W-LAN interface in the second stationary communication means.

20 . The system of claim 17 wherein the second stationary communication means is part of a second wireless communication network.

21 . The system of claim 17 wherein the first information output unit comprises a first screen and the second information output unit comprises a second screen, wherein the second screen is larger than the first screen.

22 . The system of claim 17 wherein the portable communication unit further comprises a third receiving unit that is paired with the third transmitting unit, and wherein the second stationary communication means further comprises a fourth transmitting unit that is paired with the fourth receiving unit.
