Abstract

A printing cartridge is releasably engageable with a printing device having a linear reader for reading a barcode ( 1232 ) and a central processor capable of interpreting data carried on a barcode. The printing cartridge ( 1100 ) includes a housing ( 1104 ). Media and media colorant supply arrangements are positioned within the housing and contain a supply of media and a supply of media colorant, respectively. Feed mechanisms are positioned in the housing for feeding the media and the media colorant to a printing mechanism. A barcode ( 1232 ) is depicted on the housing, the barcode being readable by the linear reader ( 1236 ) and defining a code representing data relating to the media and the media colorant.

Claims (16)

1. A printing cartridge that is releasably engageable with an inkjet printing device having a linear reader for reading a barcode and a central processor capable of interpreting data carried on a barcode, the printing cartridge comprising:

a housing;

a media supply positioned within the housing, the media supply containing a roll of media to be printed on by an inkjet printing mechanism of the inket printing device;

an ink supply positioned within the housing, the ink supply being an integral unit of a plurality of ink supplies containing different colored inks to be printed onto the media by the inkjet printing mechanism;

feed mechanisms positioned in the housing for feeding the media from the media roll of the media supply and the ink from the ink supply to the inkjet printing mechanism; and

a barcode depicted on the housing, the barcode being readable by the linear reader and carrying data relating to both the media and the colored inks contained in the media and ink supplies.

2. A printing cartridge as claimed in claim 1 , in which the barcode is positioned on the housing so that the linear reader of the printing device reads the barcode during engagement of the printing cartridge with the printing device.

3. A printing cartridge as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the barcode data relates to at least one of: a serial number identifying the media, a serial number identifying the ink, a length of the media, a type of the media, a viscosity of the ink, a surface tension of the ink, optical characteristics of the ink and an optimal drop volume of the ink corresponding to the type of media.

4. An inkjet printing device which comprises:

a body;

an inkjet printing mechanism within the body;

a printing cartridge releasably engaged with the body, the printing cartridge having a housing, a media supply positioned within the housing containing a roll of media to be printed on by the inkjet printing mechanism, an ink supply positioned within the housing incorporating an integral unit of a plurality of ink supplies containing different colored inks to be printed onto the media by the inkjet printing mechanism, feed mechanisms positioned in the housing for feeding the media from the media roll of the media supply and the ink from the ink supply to the inkjet printing mechanism, and a barcode depicted on the housing carrying data relating to both the media and the colored inks contained in the media and ink supplies;

a processor positioned in the body to control operation of the feed mechanisms and the printing mechanism; and

a linear reader positioned in the body to read the barcode and provide the processor with the data relating to the media and ink read from the barcode.

5. A printing device as claimed in claim 4 , in which the linear reader comprises a barcode scanner and the processor includes a scanner interface connected to the barcode scanner to interpret a signal received from the barcode scanner into the data.

6. A printing device as claimed in claim 4 , in which the processor incorporates a memory module in which a lookup table is stored, the lookup table being accessible by the processor and containing data relating to the media and ink corresponding to possible data carried by the barcode.
