Abstract

The invention relates to the use as an immunostimulant of a composition comprising biomass derived from a methanotrophic bacterium-containing culture. The immunostimulatory effect of this biomass material renders this particularly suitable for use in preventing disease or conditions in an animal body which are associated with, caused by, or otherwise contributed to by any exogenous foreign material, e.g. a pathogenic microorganism. A preferred biomass for use in the invention is that derived from a microbial culture comprising Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) (strain NCIMB11132), DB3 (strain NCIMB 13287) and DB5 (strain NCIMB13289), optionally in combination with DB4 (strain NCIMB13288).

Claims (19)

. A composition for use as a medicament, said composition comprising a biomass obtained from a methanotrophic-bacterium containing culture.

. The composition as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said biomass is derived from a microbial culture comprising methanotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria.

. The composition as claimed in claim 2 , wherein said microbial culture comprises Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) (strain NCIMB 11132), DB3 (strain NCIMB 13287) and DB5 (strain NCIMB 13289), optionally in combination with DB4 (strain NCIMB 13288).

. The composition as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said microbial culture is produced by fermentation on hydrocarbon fractions or on natural gas, preferably from fermentation on natural gas.

. A composition as claimed in claim 1 , for use as an immunostimulatory agent.

. A composition as claimed in claim 1 for use in preventing any disease or condition associated with, caused by, or otherwise contributed to by any exogenous foreign material.

. The composition as claimed in claim 6 , wherein said disease or condition is of viral or bacterial origin.

. (canceled)

. A method of maintaining and/or enhancing the immune system in a human or non-human animal body, which method comprises administering to said body a therapeutically effective amount of a composition as defined in claim 1 .

. A method of enhancing feed utilization in a healthy non-human animal, said method comprising administering to said animal an effective amount of a composition as defined in claim 1 .

. A method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein said animal is a food animal raised for human consumption.

. A composition comprising a biomass as defined in claim 1 , together with at least one physiologically acceptable carrier.

. A composition comprising a biomass as defined in claim 1 , together with at least one vaccine.

. A product containing a biomass as defined in claim 1 , and separately a vaccine for simultaneous, separate or sequential use in a method of maintaining and/or enhancing the immune system of a human or non-human animal body.

. The composition as claimed in claim 5 , wherein said immunostimulatory agent is used in a method of maintaining and/or enhancing the immune system of a human or non-human animal body.

. The composition as claimed in claim 6 , wherein said exogenous foreign material is a pathogenic microorganism.

. The method as claimed in claim 11 , wherein said animal is a pig, poultry or fish.

. The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein said poultry is a chicken.

. The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein said fish is selected from the group consisting of salmon, trout, cod and halibut.
