Abstract

An improved metal alloy composition for a fuel cell catalyst containing platinum, manganese, and cobalt.

Claims (10)

1. A ternary catalyst for use in oxidation or reduction reactions, the ternary catalyst comprising platinum, manganese, and cobalt, wherein the concentration of cobalt is at least 36 atomic percent and less than 70 atomic percent, and the concentration of manganese is at least 5 atomic percent and no greater than 20 atomic percent.

2. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the total concentration of platinum, cobalt, and manganese is greater than about 95 atomic percent of the catalyst.

3. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the catalyst consists essentially of platinum, cobalt, and manganese and the total concentration of platinum, cobalt, and manganese is greater than about 99 atomic percent of the catalyst.

4. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the manganese concentration is between 8 atomic percent and 12 atomic percent.

5. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the concentration of manganese is between about 5 and 15 atomic percent.

6. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the concentration of cobalt is between at least 36 atomic percent and said 50 atomic percent.

7. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the concentration of cobalt is between at least 36 atomic percent and said 50 atomic percent and the total concentration of the platinum, manganese, and cobalt is at least 99 atomic percent.

8. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the concentration of platinum is between about 30 and about 50 atomic percent.

9. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the concentration of platinum is between about 45 and about 55 atomic percent and the concentration of manganese is between about 12 and 18 atomic percent.

10. The ternary catalyst of claim 1 wherein the ternary catalyst is an alloy.
